I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but as we all know, "why did Piper get red elbow pads?" is one of the top questions Hasbro collectors want answered. Well, earlier I was flicking through a wrestling magazine and something about the advert for the WWE Unreleased DVD set caught my eye... Does anyone have this DVD set and are you able to screenshot Piper wearing red elbow pads and possible knee pads too?

To be honest, I never really thought about it. Though it is odd because he usually wrestled without elbow pads. Most likely, the pictures that Hasbro used to help design the figure probably had piper wearing red elbow pads (like the pictures posted) which is why they were included.

Warrior, Bret, Goldust, and Undertaker are all wearing different colors because in the game if you teamed Bret with Bret or Taker with Taker the second player would come in a different color to differentiate the players. cut and paste these into the google search page for images and you will see some of the production photos: 6447965099_45d8036739_b 6447967093_0406ed5982_z

That is one of the top questions Hasbro collectors want answered? Are you sure?! Well I have seen the attire choice questioned several times over the years and always wondered myself as I could never picture seeing Piper with any elbow pads at all.

I used to go into sound settings and just listen to the entrance music.

Roddy switched to red bicycle shorts and red knee/elbow pads. I liked the new look but it was short lived as he went back to the blue. Check out the video:

I hated that the figure had them, but I wasn't upset about it because he did wear them from time to time.

I gotta be honest, reading this post made me realize how getting older sort of sucks. I have read a few post like this about Piper's elbow pads. Macho Man not paint wrist and finger tape, and other stuff like this. Then you go on the Mattel and me including at time complain about how this person never wore this or it is not the right color. And it made me realize how when I was prob 5 to around 12 and playing with my hasbro figures as a kid, i never once thought omg this figure never wore elbow pads or omg why aren't the wrist tape paint. It just makes me feel old that when I look at the what I say the amazing work Mattel has done and what have Hasbro or Jakks done with the past that there is sooo much complaining. Yes I get Piper rarely wore elbow pads, or Macho Man always had white tape wrist tape, or for whatever reason people said a Mattel figure is wrong. I know now im my older years I'm a collector but they are still figures, just enjoy them.

This was a nice trip down memory-lane: I had forgotten about the Piper/Rude feud and how it started. Hasbro gave us quite a unique Piper! I'll admit I was 15 when Hasbros came out, but I always thought: how could they miss painting Macho's wrist and finger tape?

Never gave the elbow pads a second thought, but I never really got over how much it DIDN'T look like Piper. His LJN was a bit weak compared to some of their other gems, and then the Hasbro followed suit. Argh!

I remember on the PWI 1989 Awards magazine, Piper was in it wearing the red elbow pads and red short tights. So the red elbow pads did have a brief moment being existed in the WWF. It's just interesting that Hasbro went with that one look for his figure.

I always thought it was stranger that his LJN had red trunks.

It's just interesting that Hasbro went with that one look for his figure. Maybe not. His figure was probably being designed around the time he was wearing the red elbow pads (late 1989) so the designers at Hasbro probably thought that was how he always looked. The wrestlers who had a figure made for series 2, who didn't wear the same attire over and over, seems like their attire choices were also from late 1989 - the same time Piper was in a feud with Rude. Warrior, Savage, and the Rockers attire seem to all come from around the 1989 Survivor Series. Here is another picture of Piper with red elbow pads:
