Think I read somewhere once that the accents noticeably change every 20 miles or so in the UK. Imagine how many different accents there would be if that rule applied in the US? That video above is nice but doesn't include mine, Geordie. But I guess some of you will be familiar with either Geordie Shore, Cheryl Cole or Ant 'n Dec so it's basically that. lol sorry geordie accent is horrible. Ant n Dec sound fine, but man that thick geordie accent that some have is terrible.

I recently moved from Northern Ireland to Liverpool and I feel like a total d*ck cause I have to ask people to repeat what they said all the time. They don't really have a problem understanding me though as I have more of an American accent from growing up in California. My girlfriend's from just outside Manchester and on our first date, she was telling me about this concert she went to and I maybe caught about 5 words out of what she said. I didn't have the heart to ask her to repeat it as she was talking for a good 2-3 minutes, so I just smiled and hoped she hadn't asked me any questions haha. I really love the accent though, even if I can't always tell what she's saying.
Maybe some day I can have a conversation with an English person where I don't have to ask them to say something again haha.

Most Geordies are fine but there are some, like Charlotte Crosby as a prime example, who have to shout everything and it sounds awful.

Its a thing in general with regional accents across the UK and other countries ofcourse but its more distinct within the UK. People really exaggerate their accents because they cant speak properly and politely. That bimbo you just mentioned, Charlotte Crosby and others like her need to go back to school and learn how to pronounce their words in a nice manner not loud and horrible. Same with London, you hear a black person talk and white person, both from the same estate, one speaks with a gettho accent and the other with a chav accent lol. Then they wonder why they cant get jobs. In fact, Barclays do a great job with their adverts on getting a career and mentioning how to better your chances by using the correct language.

It all depends on what part of the UK they're from. I absolutely love a woman with a British, Irish or Scottish accent. You've definitely never heard the Dundee accent then

As a Geordie I feel attacked haha
All joking aside it is a difficult accent at times, as someone from Newcastle myself I often have difficulty understanding other Geordies

I have a trio of people from the UK that come into my work many times a year and they have really thick accents. Their office is in Rotterham so I don't know if that has something to do with it. The one guy is in his 60s and looks like the typical hooligan. Very skinny, balding grey hair, "Made in England" prison tattoo on his arm, and a forehead that will knock you so fast a Samoan would go "holy crap!" I understand him fairly well but his wife has a real thick accent and I have NO clue to what she is saying. The other guy is Welsh so his isn't too difficult. I just concentrate more when I do listen to them.

Only problem I really have are some of the BBC shows. I have to watch Black Books and the OG Office with subtitles. Its not so much what they say that I don't understand, it's the slang words that completely befuddle me. I love the office with Ricky Gervais. Brilliant! Right up there with my favourite comedies. So good and I can watch it again and again...

I’m American. In June 2012 I was in London, hanging out with a guy from around Manchester, and 2 Dutch guys. We had been hanging out all day. At one point the Brit goes to get more beer and the 2 Dutch guys ask me, can you understand what he’s saying? I answered, yes but I really have to pay attention. They said they hadn’t understood him all day.
So I ask if they can understand me, since I figure I’m the one who sounds different. They say, oh yeah you don’t have an accent, you have a TV accent. I ask, what’s a TV accent? They say, all the TV shows and movies we see come from the US, so you sound like you’re from TV.
