Even though I usually don’t completely agree with Russo, I do like him and thing he’s generally partially right.
AJ vs Nakamura probably won’t draw casual fans. The mainstream audience doesn’t know who they are. So I agree with him about them not being the draw for Wrestlemania. Where I disagree is that I do think the match is a good idea. You use the mainstream recognition of Lesnar, Rousey, Cena, Undertaker (maybe), Rock (maybe), and the Wrestlemania brand to bring eyes to the show. At that point you use a match like AJ vs Nakamura to tell them “Hey. We got this stuff too and it’s pretty good.” That way they can be a draw in the future.
It’s basically a piggyback effect.

Has anyone mentioned that Russo had a Christian wrestling league and a show where the main "title" was a feckin' sword..."THE SWORD OF GOD CHAMPIONSHIP." For real...

Russo is the biggest example of someone who did some good work, but only thru the filter of wwf, Vince and insane level talent. Anytime after that all he has done has produced some of the worst “creative” wrestling content ever and now has a podcast where his opinions are so idiotic and so opposite of anything that wrestling should be that it’s almost mind blowing. This opinion is obviously so off that it’s laughable. Wwf know what they’re doing atleast to a degree. They’re gonna have the good wrestling matches AND they will have things to appeal to the mainstream and casual fan I.e. Ronda Rousey, part time stars of yesteryear, etc. at this point, Russo should pretty much be ignored when it comes to anything regarding wrestling

Hes not wrong. AJ vs Naka will be a great match but its not a match that you're going to use to promote from the outside. ESPN or E! or whomever isnt going to pick up on "just a wrestler" name sake. There will be celebrities involved somewhere that the wwe will use to help outside promotions.

AJ is incredibly over. Nakamura too, but to a lesser extent. Shouldn't that be enough that be enough to draw casual fans?

See... I hate this mindset. I mean why can't WWE give all fans something to enjoy? You got two shows. WM will most likely be 4 hours. So why shouldn't they give all fans something to gravitate to? Give us an over the top spectacle. Give us pure wrestling. Give us comedy. Give us a lil of everything. But Russo would rather give us a bathroom segment instead of a potential 5 star match up. And IMO, that's why he's not in the business anymore. Apparently not. In a 4+ hour show they're only supposed to appeal to casual fans. That makes perfect sense. Because reasons.

People that don’t usually watch wrestling have likely never even heard of them. Russo made his point poorly, but his point is that if they want people who don’t watch wrestling to have some interest, AJ vs Nakamura isn’t what’s going to get them to consider watching. AJ vs Nakamura is what can keep them watching once someone more famous draws the attention to the show.

He's right. It should obviously be AJ vs. David Arquette in a twelve story cage for the title with Nakamura suspended in the air wearing a halter top and stripper heels.

He's right that AJ/Nakamura is NOT going to attract casual fans to WM. Those fans will come bc of Rousey. Those fans will come bc The Rock, if he is booked. NO ONE on the WWE roster is attracting a casual fan. AJ/Nakamura will attract fans though. both are pretty popular babyfaces. Thats attracting the wrestling fan. The casual guy who watched the big PPVs and such...could really care less. The hope is that a Rock/Rousey vs. HHH/Stephanie will get him to the tv...AJ/Nakamura might make him come back another time. He's right that AJ/Nakamura is NOT going to attract casual fans to WM. Those fans will come bc of Rousey. Those fans will come bc The Rock, if he is booked. NO ONE on the WWE roster is attracting a casual fan. Ronda Rousey / Brock Lesnar / John Cena / Undertaker / The Rock attract the casual fan. Asuka / Shinsuke Nakamura / AJ Styles / Seth Rollins / Samoa Joe etc. make them stay. That's the way I see it. QFT

I'm sure if it was a pole match he'd be ok with it.

Russo also has an obsessive hate for Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and Finn Balor. They didn't do anything to him mind you, but to Russo those guys don't look like wrestlers, aren't believable, and are main eventers because wwe likes to appeal to an audience they already have and will watch no matter what. I actually agree with the last part. Internet fans will watch wwe no matter what and would just bitch if those guys weren't pushed.

The most recent Russo episode on Podcast One is pretty funny. He covers Raw and SD with an ensemble including Stevie Richards. It's good.

Mania draws the casual crowd. Business always goes up leading to it. No individual person makes much of a difference to that, but if anyone will this time, it's Rousey.
Styles/Nakamura, on the other hand, is the type of match that might keep a few of them around after. It's not a silly over the top program that often turns them away, it's something believable, and it will be an excellent match.
