Then why make heels like Strowman and Kevin Owens, and I'm assuming a future Dean Ambrose, never face up to challenges in an effort to not have people cheer them? Fans don’t like people who suck up to the crowd or talk about “not backing down” and crap. There is a mile of distance between a face with his overbearing "never give up" confidence and a heel being able to show he can back up his trash talk once in a while. A certain fanbase has grown fed up with the Hogan/Cena/Reigns clean cut babyface ways. Austin's popularity grew out of his no-holds-barred approach. The initial Rocky Maivia character got chewed up and spit out by the crowd and it took him growing his mic skills after turning to reverse that trend. John Cena became the most popular guy of the RA Era by using the rapper gimmick he developed as a heel. Even recently, the Usos and Braun Strowman are now de facto good guys in part because they garnered cheers from the crowd by being allowed to work as competent, serious heels. Because a portion of the crowd reacts positively to what would be considered "bad guy" tactics, the only way to keep heel heat on guys is to have them run away from conflicts, preventing the fans from seeing a brawl. Booking has a large role in how the audience accepts a Superstar, of course. Also, each character really deserves their own unique treatment, requiring a level of nuance that WWE's writing staff today are completely incapable of utilizing.

Oh god, I hate that they do this with every heel wrestler at some point. I hated it in particular when they made Rollins and Punk into cowardly heels. Punk wasn’t really a cowardly heel at any of the points he was heel. He definately was towards the end of his title reign.

This is Vince McMahon's WWE. All faces are booked to crack wise and take on all challenges. All heels are booked to be chickensh*t cowards that run from fair fights at some point, no matter how intimidating they are. The heel booking bothers me a lot more than the face's, honestly. Oh god, I hate that they do this with every heel wrestler at some point. I hated it in particular when they made Rollins and Punk into cowardly heels. And that’s why I can never get behind a heel Miz. The majority of his career has been chickencrap coward that relies on other people to help him win. The only time I enjoyed him was that little run he had as a face around WM 29 because he was on his own and was written as a coward.

But hasn't that been standard fare with heels in wrestling history? Other than the giant monster heels? To be a bad guy, you have cowardly, poor morals mirroring the heroic nature of the face?

Honestly they’ve booked basically the same for 20+ years or more it’s just the writing used to be better. Or so I think.

It’s called marketing, character and branding my friend. “The House That AJ Styles Built” “Get These Hands” “This is My Yard” These are things that allow these guys to help build their brand and market themselves with T-Shirts, Hats, Towels, etc. It’s not something that is new. It was around way before The Rock. Ever heard of a little thing called Hulkamania? Or one of those nice cold cans Austin used to open up? Yeah, this isn’t a thing that will ever end and it’s really not an issue. No, I have not heard of Hulkamania. But in all seriousness, I’m smart enough to understand that they’re marketing in an attempt to sell merchandise. It’s a business. But the product they put out is hindered by an over-reliance on the same tried and tested strategies when as a business, when you need to adapt to an ever-evolving market to keep succeeding. It’s the same reason that Blockbuster went out of business and the same reason ESPN lost subscribers en masse. I think your opinion is bad. Am I doing it right? My opinion is that your opinion of my opinion is a bad opinion. I would understand if it was strictly a WWE thing. But literally EVERY wrestler does this or should be doing it.

I know exactly what you mean. Remember when Sheamus was getting the Cena Jr. Push and tried to be funny? That stuff was cringey. The heel booking is largely formulaic too, but it's the worst right after a turn when a previously competent competitor suddenly loses all confidence in their ability and forgets how to wrestle.

Man, of all the things to complain about in wrestling, wrestlers having catchphrases seems like clutching at straws. Honestly they’ve booked basically the same for 20+ years or more it’s just the writing used to be better. Or so I think. It wasn't really even better, the format was just newer and fresher then.

Yeah that’s kinda what I was thinking. Rose colored glasses, so to speak. I loved the Attitude Era as a kid but going back and watching much of it nowadays it’s pretty cringe
