We fade in to a dull but humid day as we see a faded red Toyota Corolla stop rapidly outside a house with half a picket fence. I say half as one side of the fence is missing. It looks like a drunk driver has run straight through it as we see the bits and pieces of wood scrambled across the front lawn of the house and tyre tracks stopping ever so slightly before the front window which is protected by iron bars. The driver’s door opens on the Corolla and out tentatively steps Robert Callous holding a black briefcase and wearing a cheap black suit with a colourful tie. He almost takes a fall when getting out of the old and worn Toyota, startled by the sound of a large dog’s bark coming from across the street. Callous creeps out onto the sidewalk not taking his eyes off what he now recognises as a German Shepherd, the threatening canine doesn’t move but fixates its eyes on Callous and shows its teeth. Callous walks back further and further until he collides with the remains of the picket fence and again stumbles. He looks behind him to check his route to the front door then carefully walks backwards keeping his eyes on the dog at all times. Callous reaches the front door and presses the bell stuck upon the door, which Callous cannot help but notice has several bullet holes which have created circular peep-holes accidentally in the door.
Callous [Voiceover]:
”What in the hell ever possessed him to come back here?”
Callous waits for around a minute without any sign or sound of movement from within the house, this time bangs on the door, turning back momentarily to check the movements of the large hound, then looking upon the front door again in confusion, as if staring through the bullet holes will coax whoever is in there out. He creeps over to the window to peer between the rusted iron bars. Callous takes one look between the metal pillars and falls backwards straight to the ground, dropping his briefcase to the floor in the process as the German Shepherd starts barking again. A pair of eyes are all that can be seen though the gaps in the bars into the dark room. The eyes move away from the window and shortly after the front door opens ever so slightly as we hear a deep, forceful voice shout out to Callous.
??:
"Wrong neighbourhood Pops, get the hell outta’ here!"
The door continues to open more however as we see the intimidating figure revealed as a frightfully large and muscular man. His hands are the size of shovels and his eyes are piercing as he stares at Callous slowly getting up from the ground. As we look out from his eyes and focus on his face we can see that it is severely scarred and disjointed in places. The form of the disfigurement and the lightness of the scarring indicate that this was something that happened to the man many years ago. The man, looking bemused and quite angry continues to confront Callous
??:
"Robert? What the f*ck are you doing here you sorry son of a b*tch?”
Callous, who is sweating from the forehead and now looking rather frustrated, looks up to the figure slightly intimidated and slightly annoyed.
Callous:
”Lazer, it’s great to see you again too. I’ve been searching around the country for you for months now, and I find you back in this sh*thole? Well…are you going to let me in before we get murdered out here?”
Lazer:
"Look Robert, I don’t know what the hell you want but I can only presume from past experiences that it is something that will inevitably screw me over in the long run, and make you a lot of money. Just get the f*ck out of here before I kick seven shades of sh*t out of you!”
Callous:
”Do I look like a guy who is making a lot of money now? Look at my car for f*cks sake. Listen, you’re right, I am here solely for my own interest, but coincidentally this also concerns you. I have a proposition, one that could earn us both a lot of money, just hear me out and for crying out loud let me in, one more minute out here and I think that beast across the street is going to eat me for breakfast.”
Lazer:
"Ah, so I see you’ve already met Tyson. *whistles* Come on boy get in. ”
The dogs runs directly towards the front door, growling at Callous on the way past.
Callous:
”That beast is yours? Well I should have guessed, he certainly takes after his owner, especially now. You know you used to be such a nice kid…”
Lazer:
"Yeah, well you and a few others soon managed to change that. You may call it nice, I call it naïve…and I’m not a kid now that you can influence and abuse. Just get in Robert, this better be good.”
The two walk inside through the compact and modest hall which is filled with trainers and shoes, into the living room. The living room has a dark-blue couch with a few holes inside and springs protruding out of them. There is a coffee table in front of the battered and aging couch which is overtaken with empty beer cans and plates of half-eaten food.
Callous:
”I see you’re hardly living the sweet life these days either huh?”
Lazer:
"As you can imagine Robert, after what happened, I’ve found it hard to get work. Nobody wants to see a disfigured freak wrestling at their shows, I’d be more likely to scare fans off than bring them in. I’m sure you’re not here to hear about me anyway, you’re far too self-absorbed for that. Cut to the chase, what is it that you want?”
The two sit down on the worn couch, Callous moving himself around until he finds a spot which doesn’t cause him pain in the rear.
Callous:
”Well, oddly enough actually, I am here to help you get back out from this ghetto you once clawed your way out of before. Of course there is a lot in it for me as well, naturally.”
Lazer:
"What in the world could help me now? I’ve told you Robert I’m finished. Nobody wants to see this face, these scars, and I don’t want to see people’s faces when they see it either. It bring it all back, the pain, the torture, the endless suffering.”
Callous:
”Right, listen, for one second just listen. I’m not sure if you still watch Wrestling these days, or can watch it on that old television set of yours, but the WFWF roster is quite thin at the moment. I’ve had a talk with a few of the road agents and they’re convinced they’ll take you on…”
Lazer abruptly cuts off Robert Callous which makes Callous
Lazer:
"What do you not understand? I’m never coming back to the real world, never mind Wrestling. I haven’t been in a ring for eleven years, I only keep myself in good shape as I have nothing else to do but work out. I don’t know what your game is here Robert, but I can guarantee you that no one is going to make money out of an eye-sore like me.”
Callous:
”But what if you didn’t have to show your face? Yes, I know, you’re hideous to look at…no offence. And yes, in your current state you would likely leave people having to carry their crying children out of the arena. You are a freak Lazer, more of one that people pay to see behind glass than on their television screens. Which is why I’ve had this made.”
Callous opens his briefcase and slowly pulls out a steel mask. We can see the mask only has gaps in it for the mouth and eyes, as Lazer stares at it half-bewildered, half-insulted.
Lazer:
"Na, f*ck this. You come into my house, insult my neighbourhood, my home, f*ck, you even insult my appearance. Then you hit me with this, wear a mask? Besides Robert, you and I both know I was never cut out for Wrestling in the first place. Yeah I have the power, the speed, and I can wrestle, but I never had the charisma to make it. The fans never bought me, even when I was a handsome b*stard. What is a mask going to do?”
Callous:
”The mask gives you everything you never had in the AWA. It turns you into an enigma, they don’t know who it is behind the mask and what you can do. It gives you an advantage immediately, you can tell from an opponent’s facial expressions so much about them, confidence, or lack of it, fear, lack of enthusiasm, no opponent you face can read you through a mask. It turns you into a monster. That mask will strike fear in anyone you look across the ring from. You’re the unknown quantity, the enigma, the other. Trust me when I say this, with this mask you become unstoppable.”
Lazer looks at Callous then looks at the mask. He continues staring at the mask for some time, as if to find an answer within it. He picks it up and feels the cold steel against his skin, he looks as if to put it on, then has second thoughts and hands it back to Callous forcibly.
Lazer:
"You’re gonna have to give me time to think on this Robert, it’s a lot to take in. Besides, the mask doesn’t give me that real charisma, the confidence to talk and sell a match to the fans, that’s what they want these days, not real athletes.”
Callous:
”You see I knew you would say that, so I’ve got that covered as well. I thought, what will the fans buy into more than anything? What will truly terrify them? Why, a monster that doesn’t say a word. Doesn’t need to. He shows everyone what he can do inside the ring, tearing his opponent’s limb from limb. Outside the ring, he has a charismatic, dastardly, trash-talking scumbag who he leaves all the promotion and commotion to…That’s me by the way!”
Lazer:
"You’re one crazy motherf*cker Callous…but that might just work. Listen, I still need to think this through, leaving the house is a challenge for me, never mind going on television. I know I’ll have the mask, and you to cover me, but it’s still a big step.”
Callous hands Lazer a business card from his suit jacket pocket and looks him in the eyes.
Callous:
”Think this through carefully Lazer. Think it through carefully, and make sure you say ‘yes’. Unless you want to spend the rest of your life here to die alone. This is a ticket out of the slum that we’re both in, the pay is good and so is the competition, you’ll be back into the swing of things in no time.”
Robert gets up off the couch and picks up his briefcase. He begins to walk towards the door, expecting Lazer to see him out…he doesn’t. Lazer just keeps staring at the mask which Robert has left for him on the coffee table beside the beer cans and the stale food.
Callous:
”I hope to hear from you soon, make sure it’s good news.”
Lazer:
"Yeah, see ya...”
Lazer says this without looking at Callous, continuing to keep his eyes fixed on the mask. Callous takes another look at Lazer confusedly then walks out as we hear the front door close. Lazer picks up the mask in his hand and looks at it closely.
Lazer [Voiceover]:
"Could this be it? Eleven years I’ve struggled to live. I’ve been stuck in a hole, depressed, feeling worthless to the point of thinking about committing that fatal act. Could this be my get out? I don’t trust Robert Callous, and never will, but at this point what choice do I have? I can either stay here and see out the rest of my days as a loner, a recluse, a freak, or I make a deal with the devil and go for glory one more time.”
“All these years, I’ve worried about what people think about me, paranoid that they’re looking at me. Some in intrigue, some in disgust. With this mask, no one gets to judge me, nobody gets to point their finger and say “look at the freak”. No, people now are scared of me because my appearance is repulsive to them, with the mask I’ll give them a real reason to be scared of me, when I show people what I can do when I get between those ropes.”
Lazer puts the mask to his face until it finally is attached. He walks across the living room to a mirror and looks at himself with the mask now covering his face.
Lazer [Voiceover]:
“The anger has built up inside me for years now, it’s been waiting to get out, like a pipe bomb waiting to explode. This might be the only opportunity I’m ever given, so I’ll be damned if I ain’t gonna take it.”
Lazer walks to the window and looks through the bars to see that Callous’ car is still at the front of the house. He goes to the front door, still wearing the mask as Callous looks out of the driver’s door window. He winds down the window with a wicked grin on his face.
Callous:
”So, you’ll do it?”
Lazer just nods as Callous continues to grin crookedly. Lazer closes the door behind him and takes off the mask, looking at it in his hands.
Lazer:
“No more hiding in the shadows. No, now I’m hiding in plain sight.”
FADE OUT
March 15th 2018
We fade back in two months later to the office of Robert Callous. It’s nothing spectacular, in fact that is being polite, it’s above a Chinese massage parlour, which although can be very handy for Robert, doesn’t give it the feel of a respectable representative of clients and former owner of a Wrestling Federation in his own right. Callous is sitting at his computer chair behind his desk, looking across at the dying geranium plant that is sat on the floor in the far corner of his office. Without a knock in walks Lazer forcefully, wearing his new steel mask to cover the remnants of his destroyed face.
Lazer:
“You said you had news on my opponent at New Day Rising?”
Callous:
”Ah yes. Rather an odd one actually. You’ll be facing some old aristocrat from England…”
Lazer:
“Yeah, Hamilton K. Clarke, I’ve read, and heard a lot about and from this guy. I hope he’s not expecting Queensbury Rules…”
Callous:
”All joking aside this guy may seem like an old nutjob, but he has great pedigree as being a prize-fighter, this won’t be easy.”
Lazer:
“And he’s not gonna like me. Where I’m from epitomises everything that he hates. Drugs, drink, sex, money, murder, yeah I’m his ideal opponent. He’ll want to use me as an example, somebody who has fallen from grace who he’ll want to kick straight back down again. But it won’t happen. I didn’t come to the WFWF to fall at the first hurdle, I didn’t come to make a quick buck then ride back off into obscurity. I came to let out a rage inside me that’s been building for eleven long years. I came back to bury fools like Hamilton K. Clarke, those who want to put people like me down and believe that Professional Wrestling should be good and wholesome. No, when you’ve been through what I have and you’ve lived through hell and you’re now seeing the other side, you don’t think about these bouts as Wrestling matches, you think about them as war. Hamilton K. Clarke said at Back to Basics that he isn’t a feeble old man. That he’s sharp and he’s agile. Let’s see how agile he is when that final bell rings, and I’m standing over him while he’s laid down in a pool of his own blood, wanting nothing more than the retirement home and a mug of Horlicks.”
Callous:
”Come the end of New Day Rising, Hamilton K.Clarke will be like that Geranium in the corner, shriveled up, in need of serious attention and just waiting for his inevitable death.”
Lazer:
“Everything that I wanted to do to Christian Brenner and never had the chance to I’ll have to make do with putting Hamilton K.Clarke through that pain. When I look at him and see Brenner’s face I’ll want to break his bones, to tear his skin clean off, to maim him. I don’t have a conscience anymore, not since what happened. I’ve suffered, and I want everyone to feel my pain and torture.”
Callous goes silent at the mention of Brenner and just looks at Lazer awkwardly nodding. Lazer thinks about his former best friend and the good times they had together. He thinks about how Brenner’s ego got the better of him, and changed him as a person. He thinks about Brenner’s girlfriend Ruby Vincent trying to keep his feet on the ground in those years of glory and triumph, but ultimately failing. Lazer thinks about the ultimate betrayal which lost both he and Brenner their lives as they knew it, and seemingly condemned them both to lives of solitary confinement. This goes round and round in his head until Lazer springs up out of his chair with intensity and picks up the Geranium in the corner of the room, throwing it through the window of Robert Callous’ office, smashing the glass and plummeting all the way down to the streets outside, from which a few screams and shouts are heard.
Callous:
”Let’s save the rest for old Hamilton aye?”
But Lazer had stopped thinking about Hamilton K. Clarke and couldn’t rid his mind of the thought of Christian Brenner, the name which had haunted him for eleven years.

I didn’t come to the WFWF to fall at the first hurdle, I didn’t come to make a quick buck then ride back off into obscurity. I came to let out a rage inside me that’s been building for eleven long years. I came back to bury fools like Hamilton K. Clarke, those who want to put people like me down and believe that Professional Wrestling should be good and wholesome. No, when you’ve been through what I have and you’ve lived through hell and you’re now seeing the other side, you don’t think about these bouts as Wrestling matches, you think about them as war. Hamilton K. Clarke said at Back to Basics that he isn’t a feeble old man. That he’s sharp and he’s agile. Let’s see how agile he is when that final bell rings, and I’m standing over him while he’s laid down in a pool of his own blood, wanting nothing more than the retirement home and a mug of Horlicks.”
Callous:
”Come the end of New Day Rising, Hamilton K.Clarke will be like that Geranium in the corner, shriveled up, in need of serious attention and just waiting for his inevitable death.”
Lazer:
“Everything that I wanted to do to Christian Brenner and never had the chance to I’ll have to make do with putting Hamilton K.Clarke through that pain. When I look at him and see Brenner’s face I’ll want to break his bones, to tear his skin clean off, to maim him. I don’t have a conscience anymore, not since what happened. I’ve suffered, and I want everyone to feel my pain and torture.”
Callous goes silent at the mention of Brenner and just looks at Lazer awkwardly nodding. Lazer thinks about his former best friend and the good times they had together. He thinks about how Brenner’s ego got the better of him, and changed him as a person. He thinks about Brenner’s girlfriend Ruby Vincent trying to keep his feet on the ground in those years of glory and triumph, but ultimately failing. Lazer thinks about the ultimate betrayal which lost both he and Brenner their lives as they knew it, and seemingly condemned them both to lives of solitary confinement. This goes round and round in his head until Lazer springs up out of his chair with intensity and picks up the Geranium in the corner of the room, throwing it through the window of Robert Callous’ office, smashing the glass and plummeting all the way down to the streets outside, from which a few screams and shouts are heard.
Callous:
”Let’s save the rest for old Hamilton aye?”
But Lazer had stopped thinking about Hamilton K. Clarke and couldn’t rid his mind of the thought of Christian Brenner, the name which had haunted him for eleven years.
