Intrestingly, not sure if anyone else remembers the same in the U.S. or U.K., but I first found Warrior #3 and Bossman #2 along with later shipments of S4 at TRU. Pretty sure Bossman was always supposed to be in S4 based on toyfair catalogs, but was on the back of S3 cards, so almost everyone else lumps him into S3.
Warrior I'm guessing came out late in 92' after he returned at WM8. My guess would be he would have never been releaed at least on English cards had he not come back to the company.
Also of note, I don't remember seeing Bossman when Bret/Taker/Bulldog/Dragon first appeared. And I'm guessing he wouldn't have been the first to sell out from that wave.
And then, anyone know if there was a pattern to the pink heart/purple heart Bret distribution?

I think I’ve seen that the purple Bret on the series 4 card was a later release than the pink, possibly a different assortment? I bought mine at the Argos catalogue shop here in the UK as soon as I could (he was - and is - my favourite ever so no time was wasted when I got the chance to add him) and that was the pink heart version. But then maybe five years later when the Attitude Era was briefly making wrestling cool again with the masses then someone in class sold their Hasbros to my friend; when he got them before science class, all the boys were looking at them and reminiscing, so I joined them (despite having been very consistently a wrestling fan throughout and collecting MOC Hasbros at that stage) and spotted a Bret figure in the bag, so I pulled him out and was shocked to see the purple heart! I had never heard that they had released the purple hart on the series 4 card, but I was very confident that the seller wouldn’t have ordered the mailaway from the US, so the purple heart must’ve hit the pegs locally at some point after I bought my pink heart when series 4 first appeared.
The Boss Man 2 release is interesting - I don’t really remember seeing him in stores, but since I already had the first Boss Man then I wouldn’t have any real memory of seeing him in stores as I wasn’t in the market for him (same situation as with Warrior 3). But he’s always been listed as a series 3 figure from what I’ve seen, so if he was really a series 4 figure then i suppose it can fit given how small series 4 was, though only adding one figure to that would still make it smaller than the others.

I’ve just seen a 1992 Hasbro toy fair catalogue listed on eBay by a US seller that shows a photo I’ve not seen before with Boss Man 2 in the ring with the traditional series 4 line-up - based on that I’d be inclined to agree that he should be listed in series 4 rather than 3. I’ve seen a crop of the photo before though focusing on Bret’s shades, so I guess this photo is well known. But then they also have series 3 split into two photos, and have Roddy Piper included with some of the series 3 figures, so maybe not perfect authority to conclude from. Interesting to see though.

Yup, I've seen the catalog photos you speak of. Series 1 and 2 were broken up into 2 assortments as well. Piper was re-packaged in series 3. Same happened with Bossman, Brutus, and Jake in Series 2. Also Rude I think, but probably not as much as the other 3. Series 5 was split into 2 assortments too. Mountie, Anvil, Sid, Virigil and Warlord were in one asst. And Macho, Hulk, Skinner, IRS and Martel in the 2nd. So, the whole Series/Assortment debacle is up to so much debate. Not sure how the commonly agreed on listing was determined, but I think it'll stick at this point lol.

It adds to the mystic of the Hasbro line. I can't speak for everyone but I remember it being so hard to find certain guys. I never seen the Nasty Boys in stores and that haunted me until around 1999 when I finally got a computer and bought them off ebay. A very close friend of mine in the early 90's his Mom worked at Hills and should would bring him home figures all the time and he never even had the Nasty Boys, just strange. Same here. I never saw the Nasty Boys or the Legion of Doom in stores. I was mad too because I really wanted both sets. I also never saw Koko B. Ware in stores. I saw Ultimate Warrior 3 in stores once but picked up Texas Tornado instead since I already had a Warrior figure. After that I was never able to find him in stores again. Took me about 20 years to finally get him, purchased him off eBay. Also, I never remember seeing the Yellow card series or the green card series in stores either. I didn't find out they had a green card series until the late 90s when I saw them on eBay, at first I thought they were customs. Still trying to purchase a loose Evil Crush and 123 Kid to finish my loose collection (other than rare prototypes and bagged Undertaker and Hulk Hogan). I remember Nasty Boys and LOD were really hard for me to find anywhere. And one day to my excitement when I checked my Kiddie City they had just got in a ton of both teams. And of course as a kid lol I could only afford one set and went with LOD. So I still have to live with regrets of never getting to go back and get the Nasty Boys lol. So they're one of the holes in my collection to this day.

That was the only time I saw them at retail.

I remember there was only one Kiddie City in my area for a long while and they finally built another one a bit before they closed up for good. The newer one was where I found them at and never anywhere else since then. But still was better luck for me than the damn Green Card Series lol.

For me in Massachusetts, Nasty Boys were NEVER found. LOD were available here and there, though not common. Pretty sure I got them at Child World.

Also picked up LOD off of eBay, but, that wasn't until a couple of years ago (2015 or 2016) - paid about $33 dollars for the two but they were in mint condition (no scratches or marks and none of the spikes were broken). Finally got my hands on Evil Crush and 123 Kid, so now my loose collection is complete (minus the mail-away figures, I have Hogan and Bret bagged still looking for the Undertaker bagged). Also missing the rare prototypes... Damn you Zack Ryder... Just kidding (kind-of), at least those figures are going to someone whole will appreciate and take care of them.

Then, in late 95' or 96' bought the green cards through them too.

I too never saw the yellow card series in stores, don't know why.

I loved heading there cause even thought it was a smaller toy section, they were really good with stocking new stuff. That was probably one of the sets I was most looking forward too from the classic 'Undertake Em All' ad. Really glad I picked up the entire series there at once since I don't ever remember seeing them anywhere else at all lol. Although two of my favorites from the set Shawn and Razor they gave you another chance with from the repaints, I still think they both look best in the original Yellow Card attire.

Yeah, distribution was so weird. NEVER saw yellow cards in eastern PA, and barely got red cards. Again, small place, that happened to be a great spot for figs now and then, Laneco. Saw them one day, went to the few around me and was able to get, Bam Bam, Perfect and Luger. Couldn't find Bret, Taker or Yoko, but my parents found them somehow, and I got them for Easter in 94'. Purple and Dark Blue cards were plentiful. I remember Clover had the purple cards too lol. Maybe you were in the same region, not sure if Clover was a small regional chain? We had them, Laneco and Jamesway around here.

I was somewhat lucky on this, on my way to my grandparents house one day (I think around my birthday) my mom and I stopped in TRUs to see if they had anything and they had Bret, Bam Bam, Perfect, and Luger, so we picked up one of each. Great B-day. But I never found/saw Taker and Yoko in stores. I bought them years later on eBay.

Best was ironically worst lol. They usually had the weakest selection, barely anything but I do remember seeing the WCW Galoob line there. Red card series I came across twice. Both at Toys R us actually, I have the full set of them. When I saw them the second time my dad was gonna buy me Yokozuna but I passed since I already had him. Man do I regret that now since I would have loved to have an extra of him lol-mainly why I want a new Retro remake of him lol. Yeah, dark blue card series I saw a lot at Kay Bee usually.

Really odd thing I just noticed. Macho Man #3 and Macho King both have the same item number (first number in the white box on bottom front of card).
Crazy how I notice weird things I never really picked up on before. I was trying to organize my moc's, so was sorting by asst. and item number in order. Noticed Macho's didn't really match up with the others in those assortments, so checked, and found the same on Macho King.
Guess that all but confirms he was just going to be a re-issue of Macho King, but they just make the quick changes to make him Macho Man when he dropped the gimmick and turned face. Same as Piper was re-issued again in 92'.

I honestly don’t remember seeing any of these in stores. Always have vivid memories of seeing a ton of the Sid, Virgil, anvil, Mountie set though.

Yeah, distribution was bad back then too lol. I barely got S3, only really found each once and never saw them around again. Same with red cards, and never even saw yellow or green.
Seems like when certain sets came out, shelves were pretty saturated with previous figs, so they didn't get ordered.

For years I thought about how different my Hasbro collecting would've been had the internet existed; all the information, the shared knowledge of findings, ease of ordering online - it would’ve made collecting so easy. And then the Retros were released...
