It is a world championship, it's just not the same one that Punk held. It's not. It's a title that represents the WWE Universe. If Cena won that belt he would be a 16 time World champion and a 1 time Universal champion. The WWE recognise the Universal title as a world title. Taken from the WWE's own website reporting on Lesnar surpassing Punk's world title reign: "The Beast Incarnate has officially notched the longest World Championship reign of the modern era."

I'm glad Lesnar beat Punk's reign.
Even though Lesnar is getting boring, he at least still pursues his WWE career alongside his obvious main interest in MMA. And he is successful in both at the same time.
Punk has been a joke in the UFC and he left us fans in the lurch when he departed after the Rumble. He doesn't deserve to have a longer reign than Lesnar.

Punk didn’t hold a record. “Longest title reign in thirty years” is just a statistic not a record.
I don’t have a problem with Brock being champ so long cause of punk and his non-existent record I have a problem with Brock being champ as long as punk and defending it 1/14th the times punk did.

As long as Brock s off back to humping his geriatric wife or whatever Brock things he does after he drops the title, I don't really care.

I know I'm gonna get a lot of crap but how come Okada doesn't get crap for holding the IWGP World title for 2 years and only about 15 defenses?🤔 because he still shows up and competes on the shows in tag matches, and also does the vast majority of house shows..

Lesnar at least main evented shows. Punk only main evented like 3 shows, he was a glorified intercontinental champion.

What record? He’s not even in the “Top 3” longest title reigns. Punk’s reign wasn’t as long as Bruno’s, Backlund’s or Hogan’s. So the way I see it Punk never had a record to break. Comparing Punk and the way WWE operates in 2011-13 (today) and back when BRUNO SAMMARTINO or BOB BACKLUND were champion is impossible. Punk's record should be respected for what it is/was. It's comparing apples and oranges if you have any sense of the situational factors regarding the two unrecognizably different times.

Lesnar's reign has been a joke, he should of lost the title a long time ago.

It’s not even a real record. Who cares? No Lesnar shouldn’t have broken it, but only because he shouldn’t have the belt in the first place.

The Universal Title is the other world title much like the World Heavy Weight Championship was in the first brand extension
Ex: Edge is a 11 time World Champion - 4 of those reigns are WWE title reigns 7 are World.
Brock Lesnar is a 5 time World Champion. 4 WWE title runs, 1 universal run.
But the two world title's have different lineages. The youngest World Heavy Weight Champion is not the youngest WWE Champion, the youngest Universal Champion is neither the youngest WWE/World Champion. Brock Lesnar is the youngest WWE Champion, but not World Heavy Weight Champion. Randy Orton is the youngest man to ever hold World Championship (WWE and WHC combined) Brock Lesnar in the modern era has held A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP the longest. But, for the WWE Championship lineage that's a no.

As others have if Lesnar was a fighting champion it might mean something. I'd rather see a champion who defends more often...even if that means less time as champion.

It's real easy to hold a title for that long when you only wrestle once every few months or so.

Not only that, the way NJPW does their title matches are different than WWE. In the WWE world, the title is supposed to be defended at least every 30 days. NJPW doesn't do it that way, so its not fair to compare.

He didn’t break his record. Brock is the longest reigning universal champion in history, not WWE champion. So until someone on the blue brand holds it it for 434 days, there’s no record broken.

"Who cares" should have been part of the poll. That's my thoughts.

I keep having this argument on Facebook, but you lot are more sensible: Brock didn't break any record, he set a record for the Universal Championship. Punk's record was extremely specific: longest reign with the WWE (formerly WWF, and Championship of the modern era (the last twenty five years at that point). Brock is the longest reigning Universal Champion (brand new title with no lineage prior to Finn Balor, Kevin Owens and Bill Goldberg) in history. No records have been broken because it's a different record. It's like saying Jeff Hardy can beat Honky Tonk Man's IC title reign as US Champion.

Sorry but Punk’s reign is NOT a Record. People can’t change history to fit their needs. There’s no such thing as a record for longest reign in modern era. All title reigns are for the same championship no matter what they change the belt name to. You can’t just throw the words “modern era” into something and say it’s a record and not acknowledge everything from the past. If that was the case then I can say AJ styles is the longest reigning WWE champion in the “new modern era”. Yes, it was a long title reign but it isn’t nor ever will be a record. Until someone passes Bruno’s Mark there isn’t a new record. lol

It doesn't really matter. Punk had the title so long because it was a midcard title most of the time - the real work in carrying/selling shows was done by John Cena during that time, while the WWE title was basically a glorified IC title used to try the "HEY GUYS LONGEST REIGN IN 30 YEARS" stuff to build Punk up as being on The Rock's level for a big match at the Rumble. Lesnar has held the title so long because he's hardly there to defend it and when he is, it comes down to the weird booking of never pulling the trigger on Roman Reigns. Punk's reign held down Ryback. Lesnar's reign held down Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman. Joe and Strowman are better prospects than Ryback, so Punk's did less damage.
