Some do sell and some don't - yes. Same with current figures. I would love your answer as to why they are making Rooster and Shark? Do you think they will sell well? Do you think those two characters had stellar careers? Does it make sense to you? Because apparently, it doesn't make sense to you that I want the Steiners, Bischoff, Ivan Putski, Superstar Graham, Hercules, The Bruiser etc. Yes they will sell better than most, kids will love them, a bloke with a rooster thing on his head and bloke in shark themed gear or an old man with a dodgy haircut and plain red trunks? Kids will be drawn to the Shark because hes cool, despite having no clue who he is, they will want him, in the same way kids love the facepaint of the Warrior despite not knowing him, kids like cool looking stuff thats why some legends will be made and others wont

So kids would not like Bob Backlund with a crazed look and suspenders and a championship belt? Why did the make IRS? So the kids won't like Hercules with chains and a name from a classic superhero story? They won't like Billy Superstar Graham with tye dye shirt and muscles? Wouldn't they want the evil Russians the Koloffs with Russian logo? Wouldn't they want the evil dastardly German Baron Von Racshke? They wouldn't want the Cowboy Stan Hansen or former World Champion Dory Funk Jr? They wouldn't want Koko B Ware with the Parrot? They wouldn't want Killer Khan? The Mongolian madman with his unique look and who "broke Andre's ankle? They all have looks with greater history.

I think Shark and Rooster are getting made for three reasons: a) they're under contract. Taylor is a trainer with NXT and Tenta has been under a deal for at least a couple years. b) they're color attires that will probably attract some kids as well as adult collectors. I can see a kid in a store asking for the Shark simply because it's colorful and "kid friendly" c) they come from the 90's, which is the nostalgia sweet spot right now. Nostalgia comes in waves for a reason - people hit their late 20's and 30's and suddenly have more disposable income, but may not yet have the expenses of kids, etc. I love the history of wrestling, and even though I didn't see them wrestle in person grew up on stories of Bruno, The Crusher, Dick the Bruiser, etc from my grandparents. Every time I look at a Bruno figure it reminds me of my grandmother, who first introduced me to wrestling. I'd buy those figures in a heartbeat. But I'm guessing Mattel's market analysis shows that they have a lot of collectors in that 30-40 range who grew up with the Golden Era to Attitude Era, and far fewer buyers in their late 40's to 50's who watched the territory days. A decade ago when Jakks was full swing in the CS line, those demographics were probably reversed.

A decade ago when Jakks was full swing in the CS line, those demographics were probably reversed. Excellent points! Being in the good graces of the WWE goes a long way in getting a figure made. Tenta is really well regarded in the industry too. The wrestlers all loved him as did Vince. Read Hogan's comments on him or watch Bret's HOF speech. I think it's probably easier to get someone like John Tenta's estate under contract than it is for some of the wrestlers who are living. Tenta's son has posted a few times on Reddit and seemed genuinely blown away by how many fans remembered and were fans of his dad. The opportunity to make some money and have his memory live on was probably enticing for the estate. A lot of the living wrestlers (Demolition come to mind from various shoot interviews I've watched) can be bitter about the business and often view the Legends deals being lowball offers. And maybe they are. But I do wish the Legends roster was a little deeper so Mattel had more wrestlers to pick from.

Backlund is in good graces with the WWE. Backlund is highly regarded in the wrestling industry too. In the 90's he won the championship again! Great good guy turn bad guy!

When a wrestler like Jeff Jarrett or someone new to the WWE HALL OF FAME is put into motion ... like the FREEBIRDS etc ... why are they not working in conjunction with MATTEL - WRESTLEMANIA and making them on-line and wrestlemania exclusives??? They could do that prior to producing and be on-line through WWE STORE and MATTEL only?

Correct, but what you're missing as that young fans won't know who he is, unless they relate him to Darren Young. His attire is boring as well. I'd love a Bob Backlund and would buy more than one for sure!

So the opinion is that if they used the IRS body (already made and saves them money) and put a new crazed look on Bob Backlund's face with a Championship belt and he is in good graces with the WWE he would not sell as much as The Red Rooster because the Rooster has a red mohawk and wrestled unsuccessfully as that character for probably less than a year.
Okay ...
Thanks for the opinion ... I just respectfully disagree. And sighted other samples of COOL looking figures.

They could do that prior to producing and be on-line through WWE STORE and MATTEL only? It takes Mattel a long time to produce a figure. We already know that based on past wrestler that it's a year give or take to get that figure ready. Not everyone that goes into the WWE Hall of Fame, makes a one time appearance on raw, is seen at the WWE HQ/PC, is actually under a deal with the WWE. We will use Jeff Jarrett since you named him: It was announced on February 19, 2018 that Jeff was going into the Hall of Fame. Let's say WWE and Jeff knew about it in January but waited to announce it to the world. IF Jeff had signed a deal with the WWE in January and gave Mattel the heads up that they could start the work on a Jeff Jarrett figure in January, we wouldn't see prototypes of it until way after Wrestlemania. Who knows when it would make it to retail based on the "slotting system". But the other side to that is not every wrestlers CAN sign deals with the WWE. We've heard Tommy Dreamer say that he couldn't/wouldn't sign a deal because he didn't want to give up House of Hardcore. Jarrett might be in the same boat. He doesn't want to give up on GFW. Plus Jarrett is currently signed to AAA.

erikg,
Agreed! Legend lines always run into that problem and it takes creativity and will to keep finding a place for those collectors who value the look, the history of those individuals.

I wasn't able to reply to your comment natureboyfauser before it went away, but I have it saved: I don't think any figure has been released from when a contract was known to be signed with a talent and that figure released in six months. And if you can contact Vince, he would probably spill the beans on who is under a contract and who is not. Bill isn't going to give you a list.

All about the Legends line for me. Grew up and was obsessed with WWF and WCW from around 88 til 94 and then a very brief love afair during the rock/stone cold times.
Have WWE network and have done for a while now and nothing better than relaxing watching am old PPV. haven't watched any of the new WWE stuff and doubt I will if I'm honest.
My collection is very focused on the above time period which unfortunately for me is also the priciest end of figures as well.

I’d love to see those figures and would be willing to pay a small premium to get them. At a higher price point, could these be profitable? Would people be up for that?

Thats what i thought in the past, if it was available directly from Mattel online, not like Matty, but the same way you order any other toy from Mattel, but at a higher price to compensate for the smaller run, i think its a great idea

Jesus, this thread hurts my head.
I love that sweet summer-smelling SDCC time of year. Where noobs and trolls make threads for no other reason than to argue with people.
Someone chloroform me until August when the weeds die off.
