According to former WWE writer Kevin Eck this is how Vince McMahon and Triple H view Dolph Ziggler in their eyes. Going back to 2013 when he held the Money in the Bank case
“To say McMahon had lost faith in Ziggler during this time would be a major understatement. Even though Ziggler was getting a good reaction from the fans, McMahon was highly critical of Ziggler’s instincts in the ring and his promos. Triple H wasn’t a big Ziggler fan, either. He thought Ziggler didn’t take direction well and was overly obsessed with trying to be the next Shawn Michaels.” Eck goes on to say that Pat Patterson was the only fan of Dolph Ziggler, and he pitched the idea of Dolph cashing in at WrestleMania 29. Vince didn’t like the idea, but he apparently started the next production meeting for Raw by stating that Ziggler would win the title on Raw after Mania.
Eck also says that McMahon had no plans to push Dolph Ziggler at all when he was WWE World Champion.
“After making the announcement to a roomful of surprised writers and producers, McMahon said he wanted to be clear that “we are not pushing Dolph.” McMahon explained that he was going through with the cash-in and title switch because he wanted a big, surprise moment for the night after WrestleMania.”
(The Spotlight)
I wonder if it’s still the same opinion as back then.

Lol. Wasn’t HHH and HBK’s goal to imitate Ric Flair’s career? Whats wrong with wanting to mirror HBK’s? GTFO with that, Ziggler could have left and made great money in Japan. He puts on quality matches and is a solid performer. I may be buying into the dirt sheets too much here.

I think he’s happy showing up an collecting a paycheck. Triple H may have tried to have a career like Ric Flair, but he was his own person. Ziggler is basically an HBK cosplayer.

all I will say is I think he had a ton of potential from what I could see, and rather he indeed didn’t follow direction or didn’t receive it - things didn’t pan out with him or some aspects of his career.

Dolph must have given people a bad first impression when he was in major programs with the McMahons and DX back in his Spirit Squad days. I agree the height of his career was in 2012-2013 before his concussion. Would've been so awesome for the show if Ziggler had cashed in at Mania, a dull show aside from Taker-Punk (in my opinion). Vince didn't want upstage his "real stars" I suppose.
I appreciate the work Ziggler does, but to say I see him as a top tier talent would be stretching it. In 2016 when he was briefly a top guy on SD, I wasn't impressed with his program with Ambrose, then Miz was the one who really made Dolph's US chase special. Would have needed a major image change if he was going to capitalize on his brief hiatus and return at the Rumble. Don't know if it's resignation or apathy, but he does appear to have settled himself into the midcard role. Honestly think it was a disservice for McIntyre to be put with Dolph on his callup. Cass would've been a better choice to pair with Ziggler: two guys who desperately needed a revamped image.

If I recall correctly, Triple H (or some higher up) asked Ziggler to try to be a lil less HBK like. To which Ziggler went more full on HBK. So that would explain the "doesn't take direction well".
But IMO, Dolph is in a good spot at the moment. Just change up his music and let him do what he is doing.
I would also like to add that the Triple H vs Dolph match on RAW a few years back was great. They had very good chemistry. But maybe that's because of how much Ziggler works like HBK?

Dolph had all the tools to be a top tier guy during his prime from 2010-2013. He’s good on the mic and can go in the ring. The fans were super behind him as well.
Sad that you can be the most over guy in the world and if Vince doesn’t like you your career is shot.

Ive loved the guy since day one. I thought ever sinxe his 2012 tlc win that he should have been permenantly fixed at the top of the card but that obviously didnt come close to happening. Im happy hes featured more now and his promos have improved IMO

I’ve been Dolph fan since he was walking around shaking hands, there’s been plenty of times that I thought he should have been used a bit better than he was. I actually find the Shawn Michaels similarities funny, every Monday while watching Raw with the family someone makes a Shawn/Diesel - Dolph/Drew joke.

Ziggler was never going to be the guy, and there's nothing wrong with that. Not everybody is destined to hold the top spot.

Ziggler was never going to be the guy, and there's nothing wrong with that. Not everybody is destined to hold the top spot. That’s a good point. A combination of WWE getting super lazy with the midcard over the last 15 years and us living in the Era of Entitlement means we complain whenever someone isn’t world champion all the time, but not everyone should get to be world champion anyway. Mr Perfect wasn’t. Roddy Piper wasn’t. They were still superstars. Hopefully, with the momentum that Miz and Rollins gave the IC title, we don’t have to cry that everyone needs the world title - hopefully the midcard will stay meaningful as we go forward. Dolph Ziggler has that ball to run with now.
