Chris Jericho revealed an interesting pitch that he made for SummerSlam on the latest edition of Talk is Jericho. He made a pitch about an inter-promotional match between WWE and New Japan Pro Wrestling. Here is what Jericho said:
”I got a scoop for you guys … I gotta be careful, though. … I placed a call to a certain head of a certain wrestling company, let’s just leave it at that, and said ‘I have got something for ya. It’s boffo box office, it’s big time.’ I said ‘what do you think about first time ever Intercontinental champion vs. Intercontinental champion, Jericho vs. Rollins.’ ‘What’s the finish?’ ‘Doesn’t matter.’ … The finish doesn’t matter. It’s getting people to buy it and get into it. IC title, New Japan vs. WWE, and you could make this happen. And there was some ‘well, you’d have to do it on TV.’ No, you would not. You wouldn’t have to do anything. I would show up the Monday night before SummerSlam, which has passed already, so you know that’s not going to happen. Because we get home… I literally could have, I checked, trust me, and the show is like in Greenville, South Carolina, or something. I could have been there at 4 pm, I could have run through the crowd, attacked Seth Rollins, made the challenge, made the match, Jericho vs. Rollins, IC title vs. IC title. I pitched it, got a decent response, and never heard another word again.”
”Not saying that it was Vince or anybody else but there was a very high level executive.”

He must have pitched his a long time ago. Because Rollins hasn’t been champion in some time.
Also maybe that matchbwith Gedo did a number on him because he must have forgot his involvement inWCW. it wasn’t exactly earth shattering when NJPW invaded WCW in a much more structured way when people didn’t even have access to today’s technology to have the idea spoiled.

Meh. Naito vs Jericho at SummerSlam is something I would be intensely interested in watching. Rollins vs Jericho is just a WWE match that happens to involve the New Japan title. I think Ziggler is doing some of the best work of his career right now and he’ll have a better match with Rollins than Jericho is capable of having at this point. So I’m not sad about this not happening.

Some variation of Jericho vs Rollins main evented what seemed like every Raw for months in late 2016, and it wasn’t very exciting then. It’s too recent for me to be excited about Jericho vs Rollins again.

Honestly... there's really nobody in WWE currently that I'm dying to see take on Jericho. We've seen it all. Some good, some IMO were very meh. And a match with Rollins might be okay, but I can live without seeing it.
Now if Jericho was going to team up with a few NJPW talents to take on a team from WWE, we can talk.

Imagine a WWE vs. NJPW Dream card.
WWE World Champion, A. J. Styles vs. IWGP Heavyweight Champion, Kenny Omega
WWE Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar vs. Never Openweight Champion, Hirooki Goto
Raw Tag Team Champions, The B-Team (Curtis Axel and Bo Dallas) vs. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, El Desperado and Yoshinobu Kanemaru
Smackdown Tag Team Champions, The Bludgeon Brothers (Harper and Rowan) vs. IWGP Tag Team Champions, The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson)
WWE Intercontinental Champion, Dolph Ziggler vs. IWGP Intercontinental Champion, Chris Jericho
WWE United States Champion, Shinsuke Nakamura vs. IWGP United States Champion, Juice Robinson
WWE Cruiserweight Champion, Cedric Alexander vs. IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, Hiromu Takahashi
NXT North America Champion, Adam Cole and the NXT Tag Team Champions, The Undisputed Era (Kyle O'Reilly and Roderick Strong) vs. NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship, Bullet Club OG (Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Taiji Ishimori)
Pre-show match
NXT Champion, Tommaso Ciampa vs. WWE United Kingdom Champion, Pete Dunne
I would renew my WWE Network Subscription immediately if this was the card.

I think Rollins vs Omega would be my dream inter-promotional feud. Just give em an hour and sit back.

Yeah to be brutally honest, I don't see what this would actually have done for WWE. Essentially, it's just a WWE Match, yet giving a rival company an extraordinary amount of free PR. I'd understand if it was a mega cross-over involving Kenny Omega. Everyone is already buying Summerslam, Jericho vs Rollins would have been a nice addition but it wouldn't have been a game changer.

Bring Kenny Omega in to get a halfway decent match out of AJ Styles for the first time since Mania 33 and I'm sold on anything Vince wants to throw at me for the rest of the decade.

This could still be in the works for an upcoming event. Not while Vince is still alive.

Neh, why would WWE give the rub to NJPW... Its a cool angle, but does nothing but suggest NJPW is on the same level as WWE. Its cool when ROH/Impact/NJPW/NOAH work together, because they're all indy's compared to the machine that is WWE.

Cody Rhodes is he still NJPW because if he is then him vs AJ Styles is definitely a Dream Match...but Omega/Styles because of the history there but also because it was Omega who kicked Styles out of Bullet Club
