Hey guys, everyone these days talks about bad matches, botches, etc., but I cannot think of a match I ever thought negatively about as a kid. Did yall think certain matches stunk as a kid, or like me, just connected more to some than others? When does the switch happen, age wise, to actually seeing the faults?
Just an odd thought I was pontificating about.
Cheers.

As a kid I hated technical style matches. They bored me to tears. I was more into brawling style along with table spots, hardcore, cage, HIAC etc.
As I grew older I began to respect the technical side of wrestling and look back and enjoy matches that I hated as a kid.

As a kid, you don’t watch wrestling to grade the matches. That only starts after you get into wrestling forums and gossip sites etc.
Definitely still some matches you connect with more, or where you feel a disconnect, though. For me, as a kid, I was in tears when Undertaker killed Hulkamania at Survivor Series 1991. And I was hooked by the Bret Hart matches at WrestleMania 8 and SummerSlam 1992 - wasn’t a fan of Bret, but loved Roddy and Bulldog and they told good stories. I remember really wanting Piper to do the right thing and not use the bell as a weapon.
In terms of disconnect, I was put off when Luger beat Yokozuna by count out and celebrated not winning the title. I’d seen multiple title match count out/DQ finishes by this point, and the babyface would always be angry about it, but Lex had a damn parade! And the other one was the Bret vs Shawn iron man match. I bought into the hype about how great it would be…. Then I fell asleep watching it live, and just felt so bored watching it on video. I was looking forward to the HBK era, but the match itself did nothing for me.
That was the end of innocence for me, really. About a month later, I first discovered Power Slam magazine, which was basically just the Wrestling Observer but sold in shops.

I really never liked Bret or his matches. He had a cool look, but he bored me. I always preferred Owen. I only really got into technical matches after Kurt Angle burst onto the scene. He was the perfect mix of technician and character. That’s why in my book he’s the best ever.
But yeah, any Bret match besides the ones against Owen, Michaels and the one with Piper, and that was more because of his opponents.

As a kid I don’t think the quality of the matches come to mind more of less which talent is in the matches.

As a kid I wasn’t as into womens wrestling. The fact that it was matches between women like Terri and Ivory didn’t help. Did like Chyna and Sable though.
I also stopped watching WCW because of Bill Goldberg matches.

Almost anything (with a few exceptions) featuring Hulk Hogan or Goldberg were instant borefests for me. Even as a kid, I seemed to gravitate more towards the workrate style guys such as Bret Hart, Macho Man, Mr Perfect, Malenko, Jericho, etc...
I actually didn't care much for hardcore style wrestling either back in my younger years. I loved stuff like Flair vs Funk in the I Quit match or a bloody battle like Hart vs Bulldog at In Your House or Cactus Jack's brand of hardcore, but the ECW style of hardcore with just random weapons and blood for blood's sake didn't appeal to me much. At least not until later in life when I learned to appreciate it when it was done well.
Although it was more my teen years than childhood, I hated (and kinda still do) just about anything with The Rock in it. Again, there were some exceptions, but to me he's always been a great stick man and painfully mediocre in the ring. Also always pissed me off how terribly lazy his 'sharpshooter' was.

I can’t think of disliking many matches as a kid. I even got a kick out of big show and Kane for example. I probably didn’t like really short/squash matches most because I’d be like, this match could be fun and then it’s over. Always liked seeing competitive matches between guys who are in really different places on the card and in status - do not get that enough now.
I will say that I didn’t much care for whenever a random (to me) legend would turn up - like bob backlund - and even just in segments, a) didn’t know who they were/their history and b) they’d not be back a lot of the time so it was always a bit pointless to me at the time.

I started watching in 89 so there were a LOT of bad matches lol. when superstars came a long there were tons of matches with jobbers who didn't get a hit in. a lot of the time those were boring to me

I loved Bret Hart automatically when I first saw the Hart Foundation. He instantly became my all time favorite in 89 and has remained my favorite.
One change for me, is as a kid I loved Yokozuna and just thought he was such a bad ass. But as an adult i realize that almost literally the moment he won the title from Hogan he got really out of shape and lazy and his matches were just awful.

I think the only matches I didn't like as a kid were undertaker matches and big guy matches. I hated that the undertaker would just sit up. Even as a very little kid who thought it was all real I thought it was very cheap that he could just do that and thought he should be banned from wrestling because it was unfair 🤣.
I loved Yokozuna, but outside of that I hated big guy matches, they couldn't move very athletically and it bored me. Needless to say even as a kid I hated giant Gonzales vs undertaker.
Always loved technical wrestling, Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect were the two guys that really sucked me in big time.

The only match that I knew at a young age was really bad was Stiener Triple H at Royal Rumble 03.
I don't get too deep into workmates, but even as a kid I knew that match stunk.

I grew up in the south and watched NWA/Crockett, Mid-Atlantic, Georgia Championship, etc. and I'd also watch AWA and WCCW. Loved it all. But I absolutely hated everything about the WWF. I saw it as cartoony, "fake", and over produced. I know I rub some people the wrong way on here with my trolling of "sports entertainment", but maybe now you know why lol.

I started with Big Time Wrestling and then on to the CWA, NWA/WCW Georgia Championship, AWA and WCCW. A lot of it was studio matches which generally ended with a beatdown of a jobber or if was actually a "name" match, it would end with run-ins, DQ's and double DQ's so the stars did not lose. Periodically they would come to the end of a feud and someone lost or was hospitalized and disappeared before appearing in another organization. ends with run-ins that ruined a potentially good match were the worst.

As a kid, sitting in the crowd watching Frank Gotch and George Hackenschmidt tear down the house for over an hour for the World Championship was incredible!
I have lived a great life, seeing many great matches over the years!

I am quite the opposite in the fact that I remember loving matches when I saw them as a kid, and now I rewatch them and they actually suck.
