This is something my best friend and I have thought, and discussed for a very long time. The Benoit murders really made us think about it even more, and what kind of toll the wrestling business puts on them mentally and physically.
All major sports have off seasons, usually at least 2-3 months. Even though the WWE is far from a real sport, the toll on the athletes is the same.
They could have their season run from April - December, giving the wrestlers a few months to stay at home, be with their families, and to recover from injuries. THis would also give the writers and creators a time to sit down, and come up with more creative ideas, and the opportunity to plan out their storylines for the entire year. And, if they wanted, with the brand extensions, they could run their offseasons at different times, so that there was always a product running. I know they will never do this, because it would change their revenue stream, but I think in the end, it would benefit everyone. Closing their season with Wrestlemania would already make it bigger than it already is.
Just curious what everyone else thinks. Again, I know it's not realistic, but I think it would revolutionize the industry, and make it safer, and better for everyone.

I said this a long time ago. And I was bashed because "Vince would lose money." I think WWE should take April and December off.

It'd be smart of the WWE if they were to do this, but I don't think it will ever happen.

no. during the off season the superstars will take steroids to stay big and work out. hey just need to relax. maybe we should only have raw ecw and sd every two weeks?

i think its a great point. with all the injury over the last year plus i think off seasons for each brand would be great. i also think it would give the ovw wrestlers time to improve, midcards to step up their game in indy feds and veterans/maineventers a well deserved rest.

I agree that it won't happen, but, the hit to the revenue stream would be a lot less if they split up the off seasons between brands. At least a month every quarter. But, perhaps this will get Vince to finally realize that for things to get better, you have to take a step back and change. After all, he changed the way wrestling was done when he took over for his dad, I think the time is right for another change, for the sake of the wrestlers, and the fans.

It's a great idea, but like you said, wrestling isn't like other sports (i.e. football, baseball). That includes how much they're paid. Baseball players, football players, etc. can afford to sit around for an extended period of time without having to worry about their financial situation; professional wrestlers, however, cannot.

Raw should take a few months off and then Smackdown/Ecw can take their time once Raw returns. So WWE can still have shows every week.

No, the wrestlers from what I heard are paid per week & that would be a MAJOR pay cut since they can't go work Indy feds..

Well, they aren't on every single weekday throughout the year like Soap Operas. If anything I guess you can compare to them though.
They should get off one week a month in adidtion to whatever they have now in beween shows and what not. That missing week can be recap and best of shows, or something. Or even build up.

I am sure they all get vacations thru the year, but I also agree that there should be a off season for these guys and gals. The road life seems a bit much every single week....

That would be a good idea, but WWE doesnt want to give TNA Ratings TNA should have the same, perhaps some sort of mutual understanding between the two companies(I know thats far fetched from a business point of view), for the well being of the performers as human beings. Its obvious that a lot of these guys go through great deals of physical pain, and emotional stress. Perhaps even just split the brands... have raw run with two shows a week(Monday and Friday) from a certain point, and have smackdown with two shows a week from the time raw is off, from the time they re-start, this way you have year long programming, but with different performers, and half of your employees have the "season" off. Of course finances come into play... Vince isn't going to want to cut back to lose revenue. Wrestler Salaries will decrease, because they will be working less... it will become a less desirable profession for young men and women looking to get into the business. There are a lot of obstacles, but its clear that being on the road year round, letting your body take a pounding is not an enviable profession. There should be some sort of change...

No, the wrestlers from what I heard are paid per week & that would be a MAJOR pay cut since they can't go work Indy feds.. Depends on the wrestler's contract. But, the business as a whole needs a major overhaul, and changing the way wrestlers get paid would be a nice start. They ought to receive a yearly salary, + PPV or performance bonuses.

April - December sounds fine.
Maybe go back to how Raw was. One arena, that's it. So, travel isn't that bad.
Or cut down on house shows.
Something needs to be done right now.

The off-season should be end season at survivor series and start season at royal rumble. Then they could relax during the holidays.
