from what i heard, bret was leaving wwe and didnt wanna drop the title so vince and hbk planned to just give the title to hbk even without beating bret. thats why the ref rung the bell even without bret tapping out.

Bret was leaving for WCW. At the time of his contract expiring, he was WWF Champion. Vince wanted him to drop the title to HBK at Survivor Series in Montreal. Bret didn't want to drop the title in Canada. Vince and Bret argued about it and then Vince finally said, fine, you will drop the belt another time. After this had occured, Vince had meetings with Earl Hebner, Shawn Michaels, HHH and whoever else was involved, a week or so before Survivor Series. During the match, Shawn and Bret called a spot where Shawn would put Bret in a sharpshooter. Bret was supposed to grab the ropes for a false finish, but before he could, Vince came out and told Earl Hebner to ring the bell and make the call that Bret submitted. Bret was completely oblivious to the whole scheme until he heard the bell ring. At that moment he had know that he was screwed over. HBK and HHH rushed out to the back with the WWF title and Bret spit in McMahon's face. In the back, Bret actually ended up punching Vince in the Face, knocking him to the floor. And that is the Montreal Screwjob.

HBK, though reluctant, dropped the belt when needed
Bret wouldnt do that because it would make him look bad
dont get me wrong, Bret is a great athlete, and both him & Michaels have done equal shares in every match theyve hade together but thru everything, HBK > Bret

Or is it.... Bret/HBK I mark out major for the Hart Family...but I can't just say Bret > HBK any day of the week.... That's just being unrealistic...sure HBK did bitch out to beat Bret...but I wouldn't bury him or his talent over it.

And that is the Montreal Screwjob. at nearly the same moment bret punched vince, Jerry Brisco stepped on Vince's ankle, and actually broke it. Vince then got punched and as he stated himself "went down like a ton of bricks" it was an interview on wwe confidential

I was 5 years old when it happended & know about it. I'm sorry but all you've got to do is look it up on the net or read Shawns book. To sum it it: Bret was being a little bitch & not wanting to return the favor that so many did. Which is put him over.

Yeah, you guys talk about "I'm tired of explaining this, let's put it to rest", but we're still talking about it, even in this topic.
Goes to show you...This is some controversial crap, even to this day.
Bret, HBK, and Vince all have their own stupid-ass problems that normal un-biased people are WELL aware of.

I was 4 when it happened, and literally still remember that PPV, and how my dad kept repeatedly saying "Something's not right. That wasn't supposed to happen." I was too young to know what was going on, much less even give a crap, but I do remember it.

I still think it was a work I think that somebody would have cracked by now if it was. The only way it could possibly be a work is if Shawn and Triple H aren't in on it, but still, Bret has turned down opportunities to appear at WrestleMania XX and what-not. It was hard enough to get him to show up at the Hall of Fame. I don't think he would have missed out on that if there really weren't any hard feelings.
