I was just thinking myself.
There have been a ton of annoying videogame fads. One type of video game sells, and then a billion other game makers follow the forumla producing mass quantaties of absolute bullcrap.
Right now, it seems like there are a billion first person shooters getting made, but at least they're mostly really good games. Lets take a look back to the old fads of yesterday of extreme sports.
Tony Hawk, from what I remember, started it all. There weren't really any good skating games made before then. The only ones that even comes to mind is a little known Sega game called Skitchin,
Skitchin was a great game where you would race on rollerblades through streets and freeways. Sure it might seem boring, but the way you would win most of the time, is by hanging onto back of moving cars in which would allow you to travel much quicker than your opponent. If the driver spotted you on the car, he would either slow down or stop making you fall behind.
Tony Hawk had an interesting game engine, mixed with some popular music and it was a fun hit. Then crap hit the fan and we had a mirade of horrible extreme sports games headed our way.
It started with skating, went onto biking and then for some reason I even remember Jet Skiing among many other sorts such as an extreme surfing game.
There were many great games that came from the horrible fad though. One of those games being SSX. That game used to be so much fun when it first came out, there was nothing else like it where you could get so much monster air and creative short cuts as you would be like Stone Cold and break through glass to get to these special places.
Extreme games now are just pretty dull and uninteresting, even with the online game options in most of them. It's time for these types of games to disappear....
Unless cool games like Road Rash or Jet Moto are released upon us once again. Road Rash will never happen though, as Grand Theft Auto could easily incorporate that sort of game in it's own gameplay.
The worst extreme' game of them all
