How does Elliott Smith continue to come out with new stuff?
I've heard the new Arcade Fire, it's pretty hit or miss most of the time.

The cd itself isnt sooooo good though You must be listening to something else then. Im gonna have to give the full cd a listen a few more times before I can judge it completely, but so far its not as great as I hoped, better than Good News, but still nowhere near their older stuff.

I'll have to give agree with you on that. I was mainly comparing it to "Good News...", which IMO it easily owns. I've only given it two listens, but so far the stand out tracks for me are Dashboard, Florida, We've Got Everything, and my current personal favorite Fly Trapped In A Jar. Whether one likes this album or not, it is much more original than 90% of the garbage out there.

Florida and Fly Trapped in a Jar are definitly great though.

Or do you prefer their Pavement-esque sound from way back?

The new Smashing Pumpkins album comes out in June if anyone cares. Do you have a release date? from alternative addiction The Smashing Pumpkins have christened their reunion album "Zeitgeist" and announced an unusual release date of July 7, a Saturday, for the album. The news was broken this week to fans on the bands MySpace page

Please do find me some other bands that are making similar music to Modest Mouse, I'd be very interested. And I try to download about 5-10 random indie/rock/alt bands every week, and a lot of them sound similar, but I could just have bad hearing.

I probably wouldn't know at this point, because I stopped listening to indie music 3 years ago.
But besides Isaac Brock's strange vocals, I see nothing that really seperates them from the masses of indie and alternative bands out there. Built to Spill, the Pixies, The Shins, Pavement, Flaming Lips, etc. etc. And even his vocals sound copped from Tom Waits half the time.
I'm not saying that Modest Mouse stole everything from Waits, because that's not true. Every band in music takes traits from other artists and then other artists take traits from them, and so on.
But Modest Mouse isn't really that groundbreaking in my opinion. They're a good band and they have some good albums, but when I boil it down to it, they're another alternative rock group. Only they just so happened to manage to get lucky and land a song of theirs on a Nissan commercial and shortly thereafter put out a platinum record. (whether the Nissan commercial was their turning point to success or not, I'll assume it was because it was the first time I had seen them mentioned other than in my record collection or from some of my friends).
I like them, or liked them atleast, but I just don't think they're more creative than "90% of the music out there"...

I would say Modest Mouse got their style from Talking Heads and Pavement with some dashes of other alt-rock acts like the Pixies (though every alt-rock act is supposedly derived from the Pixies). Brock's voice is actually more of an imitation of David Byrne than Waits.

Maybe I spoke too hastily since there are a lot of bands out there. 90% might have been a bit of an exaggeration. I personally wasn't that big a fan of "Good News...", but so far I am really digging their new album. However, to be totally honest, I often find myself downloading an album, listening to it constantly for a week or two (and really loving it at the time), and then just getting tired of it. There aren't that many albums I'll listen to on a consistent basis throughout the year. I don't really know if that is a bad thing. Though, I am and always will be a sucker for John Mayer.

Oh, and that was mainly what I was referring to...IB's strange vocals, but their music is definitely an extension of many other bands...totally agree with you on that. I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing.
