i think the general cobain hate is kinda ridiculous...he was an artist. he struggled with his writing lyrics to his own personal perfection, and for that he is atleast talented because he accomplished it both in sound and display. he wrote some really cool crap too. in terms of his voice, he was a in grunge singer and his voice was good for that, unique too. anyone who cannot atleast identify the talent he had is just looking to lip or missing the obvious.

But "grunge" didn't really exist too much before Cobain came around, so saying his voice is perfect and fitting for a genre Nirvana more or less created (popularized) is ridiculous and creating an excuse for crapty singing. "Oh, it's supposed to be like that!" No. The guy can't sing. Give any excuse you'd like, but it doesn't improve his talent.

Blah blah he's dead big deal, lots of people are dead. I could care less if he died or not really, I'd still enjoy Nirvana regardless. I don't think they would be so widely regarded as being amazing, but they would still be known and liked.

Kurt's voice fit the music perfectly. Would anyone really want to hear someone try to actually SING "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? That's what makes it as great as it is.

Toni Amos did it amazingly, as did Leif Garrett, I actually like their version much more than Cobain's. I really hate Nirvana, they never had anything on Pearl Jam. I'm only happy that Nirvana spawned Grohl's actual talent. To be on topic, eventually they all would've gone the way of every one from that time, been HUGE stars, or dropped off. Nirvana I always felt would've dropped off and broke up. Biggie Small, we probably wouldn't have to suffer through Diddy taking over MTV any chance he gets. 2Pac, rap might actually be better. As much as I dislike 2Pac, he may have helped eventually weed out the awful rap that came up over recent years.

Agreed. Give me someone who can paint pictures with their lyrics over someone with a pretty voice, any day. Bob Dylan can't sing, Leonard Cohen couldn't sing. That doesn't mean they weren't two of the best poets of the 20th century.

Cobain was a good songwriter, a terrible vocalist with abysmal range, and an average guitarist at best... I'll give him credit, he penned some really good lyrics, but the guy completely sucked as a singer. The best example is MTV unplugged when he sounded like a dying cat getting raped by an elephant, especially when trying to sing those Meat Puppet songs. I guess the idea of Unplugged in New York was just lost on you, but his voice is SUPPOSED to sound like that. It's stark and cold, and Kurt's voice goes along with that. Really? Because 2Pac has dropped six posthumous albums, along with the five studio releases that he put out when he was alive. Guns N' Roses has only released five albums (this is, of course, including "The Spaghetti Incident?"), and they've been around how long? Wow, you're really not up on things, are you? Musicians peak in their 20's and 30's(for the most part)... and I think thats why a guy like Axl Rose has struggled to release a record... he is finding it hard to realize what is relevant in music. And what is relevant is always changing. Or maybe it's because the guy is just mentally insane? Just a thought. I get what you're trying to say, and you're right - generally, it's tough for musicians to consistently put out quality material, and thus we have many sub-par releases from aging rockers. But at the end of the day, wouldn't you take that over fourteen years of Axl Rose jerking fans around with "tentative release dates" and such? I mean, is Chinese Democracy ever going to come out? I actually think being mentally insane would help one write great music. I am somewhat of a musican these days, and have written all of my songs through tough times in my life... so I think whatever problems he may have, mental or otherwise probably help him in penning some great music. And yes, I would take sub par music over no music... but I can kinda see where a guy like Axl is coming from. I personally think the guy is afraid to put out an album instead of a great album. Say what you will, the guy released three incredibly successful records with Appetite, UYI1, and UY2... and thats pretty hard to follow up on. I think if you look at him now, that may be the prototype of what Cobain would be if alive... an aging recluse struggling to release music that is relevant to today's society.

And "stark and cold" is different from "cracking and out of breath"... on Lake of Fire and Plateau, the guy couldn't hit any of the notes... It sounded amatuer and unprofessional. If I wanted to hear that, I'd go to the local Karaoke bar... not watch MTV Unplugged, where I expect some sort of professional performance.

I enjoy some of Nirvana's music. I'm starting to dive into Bleach, but the band isn't that great. Cobain's voice has absolutely no range, just feels empty. Whether "he wanted it to be that way" or not. He wrote some decent songs though. Dave Grohl, imo, was the true talent of Nirvana, musically.
I'm with brian, except I like Nirvana a little more than he does.
