My first show with my first band wasn't bad, it was at Club Krome in NJ. I played a show there with my next band that was a complete disaster. But we moved on and recovered, so even if you do bad, it's not the end of the world.

Our first show was at 'The Galaxy Cafe' in NJ, pretty bad. Took forever to set up the drum rack on that small ass stage. Our guitarist sucked in front of people and handed his guitar to someone else who started playing non-stop break downs. So, we killed him.

My old band played one show at a little club, supporting another local band. There were about 15-20 people there. We played our only two songs and only got sympathy claps. It was terrible. About a week afterward we broke apart.

We opened for a pretty well known local christian band. The audience was mostly their audience. But we went out and did some off the wall songs. I don't know what we were thinking. We opened for a christian band and did a hard rock version of Bloodhound Gangs "The Bad Touch". wtf? Needless to say that band didn't last long
We were pretty nervous but once we got up there it was fun. I had an easier time with bands I was after that though. I got more of an adrenaline rush as opposed to nervousness.

Im not in a band, but my close friend is lead gutarist in a local SKA band in Cincinnati, and I went to their first show at the MAd Hatter in Cincy and they were nervous as hell, they were opening for Brians moving out and the Argonauts (dont know if you know who that is) so the pressure was on em, but they over came it and kicked ass.

My first gig was at an all day outdoor festival. anyways, I thought it would be fun to throw a pick in the crowd after our last song. I threw it, it hit and scratched my best friend's aunt's cornea. . bottom line. dont be nervous. its a lot of fun. just roll with the crowd.

my most recent band's first show was a halloween/birthday show... my signer and bassist were dressed up as cowboys... yeaaaaaaah, the chick who's birthday it was, also booked a country/rock group. They thought Brian and Jayson were legit rednecks. The clothes were ditched and replaced soon after. The show however, went really well. We probably played to around 150-200 people. I ed up once though, completely forgot the ending to one of our songs... no one really noticed though. Moral - Punk bands don't play with country ****. One hell of a surprise to drop on us.

my band, 86 To Nowhere ( www.myspace.com/86tonowhere ) started at the Emergenze battle of the bands at Club W in Buffalo NY. It was a sweet show in front of 350 people and went about as well as it could have. our guitarist killed his solos, the only trouble was we played a lot of songs at a faster tempo, so the singer missed an entrance b/c she's used to waiting longer than she had to. it happens though, not a huge deal. check us out. www.myspace.com/86tonowhere

I understand how tempting it is to play shows right away, but half the reason some bands don't get even the local exposure they want is because they get out there, only have two songs to throw out, and they're both covers.
Don't play shows until you can fill at least 30 minutes with originals.

I hate seeing most local hardcore acts onstage for more than 5. Especially since by then they've run through two albums worth of material.
