The idea to push William Regal as the King of the Ring was suggested to Vince McMahon by Triple H. Apparently The Game thinks that the RAW General Manager can draw huge heat playing the King gimmick and showing off in the ring. Vince was originally against the idea because he prefers the Regal character and isn't a big fan of his in-ring work. Triple H continued to push hard for Regal and the rest is history.
The match with Hornswoggle was made to put Regal over as a huge prick and the match with Finlay was designed to put him over as the mega heel. The final match with CM Punk was to show Regal could still kick some ass in the ring.
The King of the Ring tournament ws originally scheduled to take place in the UK last week as the WWE creative team thought that a huge promotional push for the first ever UK King of the Ring would create a nice buzz. At one point the tournament was planned to take place over all three WWE shows during the UK tour. Vince nixed that idea, believing that it would make no sense trying to push Regal as a mega heel, winning the tournament in the UK.
I knew HHH was behind this idea - and what HHH wants, HHH gets..

Regal still deserves the spot though.. I just can't see Regal in a main-event push - simply, because the US fans won't allow it, or accept it..

I had a feeling, tbh. I just want to know where their gonna go with this 'King Regal' thing; I hope it's not King Booker all over again . I honestly don't see many fans being interested in Regal as King, if not at all (no offense to you fans of his, as I am as well).

Despite the countless ways WWE could go about ruining this feud,
I'm actually sort of interested in what Regal and Triple H can do together when one doesn't act superior over the other. If booked correctly (as in, to make him seem like a threat), Regal, I believe, could carry himself in a main event position.
It might turn out to be a smart idea after all.

Regal, like Finlay and Dave Taylor, deserves one last good one.

Its about time Regal got some good recognition and all, for once HHH is right, Im rather glad to see Regal getting a go. Nix the GM idea and get him wrestling.

I reckon that there was more guys in a position that if they won the KOTR would benefit more than Regal superstars like Cade, Burke, Benjamin, Morrison, Kennedy, Umaga and Chavo

I'm American bro and the thought of Regal as champ would be f**ken awesome. The guy is so underrated. Now I was pulling for Jericho (and how he could lose to the untalented baffles me) but when Regal won over Punk I was cheering. Great wrestler, he needs a push

How could Vince hate Regal's in-ring work??? What the does he want, a roided up jackass who couldn't wrestle his way out of a paper bag? Because we already have Batista for that.

Even if Regal wasn't friends with HHH, I'd still love him as KotR. I have tons of respect for the man every since he stiffed Goldberg.

He wasn't champion but he sure as was the main part of the show when he was on. Only thing is he didn't have a belt around him. And yes, it has been hell and is turning even worse now that Criple H has the belt.

Had Orton won, who could he have faced? CM Punk? He isn't ready? He went through all the other faces.
