Mic skills for sure. Name one guy who became hugely sucessful but was not entertaining and I can name you 10 who were great on the mic but not necessarily in the ring. Chris Benoit. Not hugely succesful, but succesful nonetheless. He's the only guy I can think of.

Mic skills.
Guerrero, Benoit, and Mysterio. some of the best wwe Wrestlers in the last 10 years, took them over a decade to get the WHC/WWE title based on their wrestling skills alone, because they barley had mic skills.
Rock, Austin, Cena, Batista, Edge, Orton. some of the best entertainters of the last 10 years, took a short time for them to get the gold, when actually given the mic. Like with Edge, once he started talkin on the mic and being more entertaining, he got the belt fast. if he never went "rated R" he would still be chasing the Tag titles and IC.

You're referring to the WWE with this question, I'm assuming.
In WWE, mic/entertainment skills are FAR more vital than actual wrestling/working ability.
Sure, if you're technical and without mic skills you may get a decent spot, mid-card, maybe if you are lucky get a short time in the sun (like Benoit, for example), but to truly LAST and remain as a high-draw that will be secure in that position, you need to have the mic skills.
There are a few exceptions. One would be Bret Hart who made it big without really good mic skills. But ...
The Rock, Hogan, Warrior, Cena, etc ... all mediocre to "pretty good" wrestlers who had a character, charisma and mic skills to secure their spots as pretty much permanant draws. These are the guys that can stay on top as long as they want pretty much until they decide to be a douche like Warrior backstage or just leave to do movies likes The Rock.
WWE is honestly more entertainment-based than wrestling. It is a TV show that needs to draw in a large audience with charismatic, entertaining characters. The medium of it is wrestling and sports-based, but the BOTTOM like is that WWE is entertainment and needs to be entertaining, therefore the wrestlers need to be entertaining.
In a way, it could be related to the music business. A lot of bands who may not have the most technically gifted musicians hit it big because they have some sort of stage gimmick or a good look or a charismatic performance that makes them exciting ... even if the actual musicality is sub-par.
It's on TV, it needs to garner ratings and those who entertain best reign supreme, end of story.
