Computer games are a common part of a child's life in the US, with 97 per cent of young Americans seen to be regular gamers, according to a new survey. The survey from Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 97 per cent of Americans aged between 12 and 17 are active gamers. Broken down, boys tend to play computer games more than their female counterparts, with 99 per cent of boys regularly playing games such as Mario Kart Wii and Wii Play, compared with 94 per cent of girls. The bulk of the respondents to the survey also admitted that they had played a computer game just the day before the study and they played games from a range of genres ranging from Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock to Madden NFL 09. Some 1,102 12 to 17-year-olds were spoken to in the survey along with their parents. Among the hits included on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock that a gamer can reproduce include One by Metallica and Helicopter by Bloc Party. I wouldn't let my kids play anymore than an hour a day. Then i'd make them spend the rest of the time outside or doing something where I can watch over them.
As a teenager, that would change a bit, as I couldn't control it as much. I'd buy the newest system with the craptiest games on it, then hold in evil laughs as my child can only play Burger King game sequels.

Games have started taking over as story telling and entertain mediums. Video game hold as much power as movies and music as far as entertainment value goes.

There has only been a few select games I have ever been really into, and even then I hardly have the chance or the patience to play them, so I probably average 3 - 5 hours of "gaming" a month. Though I do enjoy screwing around in GTA IV every now and then.

What I'm wondering is, what the hell are the other 3% doing? Reading? You're in America, damnit. Sit your active ass on down, and play some video games.

A lot of my friends don't play video games. I guess they just spend most of their time on myspace and crap.

I turn 31 this Monday and I haven't owned a game system since PS1. I work, I read, I write. In short, I've got better things to do with my time and money.
