The Final Meeting
The Undertaker vs. Triple H
In the Fall of 2008, Vince McMahon finally decided to retire from the company. Many wondered who he would hand the company down to -- Shane or Stephanie and Triple H? He gave them every suitor, including some outside the family, an oppurtunity to interview for the job with Vince and the rest of the board of directors. After a few weeks of diliberating, they made the announcement: Shane McMahon was the new president of the WWE. He immediately went to work on hiring his own workers on and off camera and firing several key components of his father's regime. He then made the announcement: no longer would the company be referred to as World Wrestling Entertainment; no, Shane was bringing back the SPORT of professional wrestling with World Wrestling Athletics. With the contracts of Raw and Smackdown running out, Shane debuted a new show, his own show, WWA Fallout on Monday Nights on ESPN2.
Just two months later, a new show debuted: WWA Voltage. It started as a late-night one-hour broadcast on ESPN Classic, but after just three short months, WWA and their partners decided to move Voltage to Friday nights in primetime on ABC! Voltage quickly grew to be competitive with Fallout.
However, after an 18-month reign, Shane's baby, Fallout, was cancelled by ESPN due to scheduling changes and the economy. In its place, ESPN picked up a shorter broadcast which would come to be known as "WWA presents ECW." The Tuesday late-night broadcast would feature the young, up-and-coming stars of WWA, while Voltage took over as the new flagship.
