 i though Hurley went into the church with everyone else though  how can he be an island protector thingy? |

well, didn't all the people in the church "die" and they didn't actually survive the initial crash so they were "dead" and went off to heaven but Ben didn't go into the church b/c he said he had "things to do" ... because he was already on the island when it crashed, so he didn't have to go into the church so how can hurley (who went into the church) be an island overseer or have i just completely overlooked this and got the ending completely wrong  ? |

Yeah Hurley was still alive on the island for how ever many years after Jack closed his eye and died, The whole flash sideways of season 6 was of them all in the after life once they had died in real life.

I believe Ben didn't go into the church as he wasn't ready to move on with the rest. He needed to be a father figure to Alex first.
