Democratic challenger Al Franken finds himself on the cusp of winning a seat in the United States Senate after Minnesota's canvassing board awarded him a host of challenged votes during deliberations on Thursday. As of 8PM ET, the Minneapolis Star Tribune projected that Franken would finish the recount process with a lead of 89 votes, positioning him to become the 59th senator caucusing with Democrats in the upcoming Congress. According to local paper tallies, Franken currently trails Sen. Norm Coleman by a mere five votes, down from the 358-vote margin that the Republican held just last night. The Associated Press has the count even closer, with Coleman ahead by two votes. An aide to Franken told the Huffington Post that, according to the campaign's internal count, Franken has already taken a small lead. www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/18/frankens-senate-victory-c_n_152241.html

I don't know that the real story here is the 59th democrat, as your headline would suggest, as much as how freakin' close this election really ended up being. I mean, if ever there was an example of why you should go out and vote!

No, they need 60 for that. But I'm sure they can pull one Republican.

Yeah...I'm pretty certain there is at least one really liberal Republican or one who really wants to work with the Democrats...

Arlen Spector John McCain (If he goes back to his old self) So who I was thinking! We also have Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. So we have a few to choose from.

We also have Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. So we have a few to choose from. When I state this, please remember I am independent. I do not want to see an all Democratic Government. By that I mean enough for Democrats to get everything passed through with no struggle. Mostly due to the fact that the Republicans, while flawed in what they were doing, actually do stuff. The Dems have the right idea, but seem to be really lazy. I remember when they took controkl and spent about a week congratulating themselves on taking over. Mind you, no bad legislation was passed, but NO legislation was even discussed on the floor. We need a balance, so that the party-liners go to each side of the issue, but the independant thinkers (though few in numbers) can weigh both positions and make a stance.

Dem's aren't lazy. They are cowards. They were afraid to do anything because the big bad Republicans might not like it. That's one thing I like about Republicans. They don't ing care if you hate them, if they want something done, they are going to do it. They aren't going to think if the Democrats are going to be ok with it.

Yeah it just makes me giggle....thinking of how people think Lincoln was a Democrat...but there's other things they say about Lincoln that make my eyes itch. Who was on the Green ticket?? I don't recall the Green party being on our ballot?
