Why did Nintendo change the real version of Mario 2 to the goofy version that we got, and was "our" version ever released in Japan (as a Mario game)?

I don't know if there is a clear-cut answer. I thought it had something to do with it being "too hard." I'm glad it came out in Super Mario All Stars. Other than that possible reason, I'm not sure.

I was reading about it the other day, I guess mario 2 (U.S. version) was basically a modified Japanese game. All the sprites (characters) were changed, and the actual mario 2 was released in japan I think.....possibly the lost levels have something to do with it. I don't remember

Our version of Super Mario Bros. 2, which was a re-sprited version of Doki Doki Panic, was released in Japan renamed Super Mario U.S.A. The reason the game was changed for the US market is officially because it was really hard and it was a carbon copy in terms of looks and gameplay to the original Mario, and Nintendo of America didn't want to put it out. The REAL Super Mario Bros. 2 was only released in the US three times. As the Lost Levels in the All-Stars game, as an unlockable for the GBC Super Mario DX, and as a Virtual Console game on the Wii. The version on the Wii is the only straight port of Super Mario Bros. 2 released in the States.
