Think of a storyline or event that turned a former mid carder into a star. Owen Hart/Bret Hart feud in 1994. Lets keep this going.

I think Hardy beating Triple H clean last year at Armageddon, and the his subsequent feud with Orton after (including the dive off the stage) really made him look like a legit main eventer.

As far as turning guys into main event stars...the Rock vs. Triple H at Summerslam 1998 is the match that made both guys look like they could main event. And a couple months later, the Rock did. It took Triple H a heel turn to get up there but he was well on his way after that match.
Austin vs. Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 13 turned Austin into a main event threat, and to a lesser extent, so did their 5 star forgotten match at Survivor Series 1996.
Edge vs. Eddie Guerrero on Smackdown! in their No DQ match, or more likely, that whole feud, really showed that both guys had it to main event. It took a couple years for both but that was the catalyst for them.
Chris Benoit was made to look like a legit main event star at the 2003 Royal Rumble, following all the great matches he had in late 2002 on SD! Again, took a year, but damned if that match didn't get him over huge.
A couple more...the feud with Foley, more specifically their Backlash match, really put Orton over huge and was the kickstart of his main event push. It showed he could hang in the main event and take one hell of a beating. In that same respect, I believe that Edge's match with Foley at Wrestlemania did the exact same thing. Even with Edge winning the Championship before, it certainly helped him look like a main event star when he demolished Foley.

I think that was set in stone when he fought the Undertaker in that ladder match! I've gotta say, and this may contradict a couple points I made, but it still took Jeff 5 years after that to become a main eventer. That match may have made him LOOK like he could hang with the big boys, but he was still ways away from it. The match itself isn't even that good; it was just memorable at the time because people were buying that Jeff could win the Championship in an upset, but it's better that it didn't happen at the time. I agree that his win over Triple H at Armageddon, and even him and Triple H eliminating all 5 guys at Survivor Series the month before, really started the believable main event push of Jeff.

Diesel in the 1994 Royal Rumble, eliminated 8-10 guys and had the entire arena chanting his name. He was just HBK's bodyguard at the time, but this is what I believe open Vince's eyes, that Nash could be a star.
Bret Hart vs British Bulldog at Summerslam 1992, the main event was won by Davey Boy, but it showed that Bret could carry the main event match, hence putting the belt on him just 2 months later.

Punk beating Edge?? LOL isnt he back to mid card status now? yup....
#1 and #2 has to be Jericho beating Triple H on Raw for the world title (later reversed) as it really gave Vince the idea that a WCW mid carder could be world champion (Later see Benoit, Mysterio, Guerrero)
and the other would be Sting going 45min time limit with Ric Flair at the 1st Clash

He would not be where he is now without that match.
