A friend of mine is giving away a Catahoula Leopard dog, but I think he'd likely jump my 4 foot fence and would probably be way too active.

Aww! That stinks, I would hate that if I already say the dog. Maybe you took too long? I don't know. Well try to find another dog that no one is currently looking at.

That sucks but now you should go to a pound or animal shelter and rescue a new pet.
They are mean for leading you on like that..
What kind of dog was it?

And I'm off to look at some basset puppies right now. I'm not entirely sure I want a puppy though. Part of me says I'm much better off with an adult dog.

Went to see two basset pups. I confess I don't know a whole lot about picking puppies. These guys were the last two of the litter. Dad was very excitable and outgoing and jumped all over me. Mom was definitely more mellow and didn't really care that I was there. She'd let me scratch her ears, but that was about it. Both of them seemed healthy.
Pup #1 was definitely more of an alpha. He would not let me roll him on his back no matter what. If the other puppy was being petted and he saw it, he immediately ran over and stuck his head right in your hands to get his ears scratched too. He wasn't interested in following me around. He would come if I called him though. Well, as long as he wasn't interested in something else he would.
Pup #2 was more passive. He let me roll him on his back without any problems. He wouldn't follow me around, but never got too far from me. If I tried to call him, he kind of looked at me like he couldn't be bothered, but if I pestered him enough he would come. When I showed up, he hid under a chair, but once he saw his brother was being petted, he came out and was very affectionate.
I'm not sure if I want a puppy to begin with as they are definitely more of a handful than an adult dog. Also, I'm not sure which of the puppies would be more suited for being laid back and spending a significant time alone while I'm at work. I'm definitely going to have to think about this one.

Puppies are a LOT of work. And if you don't put in that work, your dog will end up being a nightmare. Start with a grown dog who is already trained.

Either one will work out Hulk, as long as you train either the first to be less aggressive or the second to be less shy.
Get both LOL

Get both LOL I don't know that the first is aggressive necessarily, but he's definitely assertive. HE wants to be in charge. Not sure I have the personality and experience to deal with that. The other thing I have to consider is I'll be gone 8-9 hours a day at work. These puppies are used to someone being home all day. They're 13 weeks and haven't been crate trained at all. They are house trained and used to going to the door to be let out when they have to go. How well is this guy going to deal with being alone for 8-9 hours? Even if I come home at lunch (which I won't always be able to do) will he be able to deal with being crated with a couple of toys for that long?

Damn dude that sucks. I'd be pissed too after finding out "they changed their minds." I've always been a supporter of Humane Societies and my wife and have had greta luck there.
Best of luck to you.

Just came back from there. They had a cocker spaniel that seemed very laid back. Could just be in shock from being in a cage like that though. He's only about 20 lbs so he's not that big, but looks pretty athletic. The owners who gave him up swore he couldn't get over their 4 ft privacy fence, but I'm somewhat skeptical. (Just my nature I guess.) They also said he was kept in a house all day though I don't know if people were around all day or if he was just given free reign of the home.
