It had been rumored for UFC 99 in June but according to JD Penn, BJ's brother and manager, the UFC Lightweight Champ likely won't return to action until July or August. From Sherdog.com:
“No, it’s too close to BJ’s last fight,” the elder Penn wrote in a text message. “He wants to spend time with his baby.”
Penn, 30, welcomed his first child, daughter Aeva, to the growing Hilo clan in October 2008. However, the new father spent a substantial amount of time thereafter promoting and training for his Jan. 31 mega-fight against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 in Las Vegas.
St. Pierre pummeled Penn (13-5-1) for the majority of four rounds in their 170-pound contest until the Hawaiian’s cornermen called its quits before the last stanza. Now the fighter’s camp wants Penn to receive all the time he needs to re-group for his bout with Florian.
“We are still negotiating the fight,” the elder Penn said. “No date [is] scheduled, but we are thinking late July or early August.”

Yup, this has been known for a bit. I believe it was confirmed after the GSP fight.

^^ do you just come into threads saying
"yup this has been confirmed for some time"...
anyways I can't wait for this fight. Unlike a lot of people I think this will be much closer than it seems like it'll be. On paper Penn should just walk through Florian. But I think Florian has excellent standup, great muay thai and decent enough jiu jitsu compared to Penns jiu jitsu. I think Florian takes this. I know I will likely be the only one picking Florian but f*** it.

Bring on Kenny Florian.
Seriously, Florian has practically zero chance of being the UFC champion going into 2010. If, by some crazy scenario, he actually beats BJ Penn; the next guy in line almost has to be Sean Sherk... And quite frankly, Sean Sherk is basically the prototype for how to beat a guy like Kenny Florian.

And quite frankly, Sean Sherk is basically the prototype for how to beat a guy like Kenny Florian. Nailed it on the head, my friend. Sherk bled almost non-stop for five full rounds, drenching both himself and Florian in blood, and Sherk still handed Florian his ass. Penn then went right ahead and handed Sherk his own ass in their fight. No disrespect to Florian, but unless he's improved dramatically, Sean Sherk demonstrated that he was leagues above Florian in their fight, and Penn demonstrated that he was leagues above Sherk in their fight. Just basing it off of history alone, Florian's chances are slim.

I pray to God that Florian beats BJ, but honestly I can't see it happening.
As far as Florian compared to the Sherk fight, yes, Florian got destroyed. But he's become a completely different fighter since then. I'm not saying we wouldn't see a repeat performance if he fought Sherk again, but I'd give him a better chance against an accomplished wrestler (like Sherk) who has all but abandoned his ground game since his return. Sherk looks like he'd rather be standing these days

Sherk looks like he'd rather be standing these days I think Sherk wanted to stay away from BJ's guard, which is why he tried to stay on his feet in that fight -- but we see how that turned out. And in his fight with Tyson Griffin, I think Sherk just wanted to prove he could 'do it all'. Sherk really is one of the most complete fighters there is. I have a ton of respect for him.

Ken flo's Muay Thai is sick and his Jiu Jitsu is quite nice.
BUT, I think Penns an overwell more seasoned fighter and will take the win

I've wanted to see this fight for so long.
Honestly, if I was putting money on this fight I would bet on BJ. But I'm not putting money down, so I'm going to take a chance and say Kenflo wins.
BJ is obviously the better guy on the ground, a big factor is how good is kenflo defending on the ground? Good enough to stalemate BJ's bjj? I think on the feet Penn has the power advantage, but I'd say Florian is the better striker of the two. And the wrestling is the biggest question and will probably play the bigger role. How much has Florian's wrestling improved since the Sherk fight?

Florian might be better with elbows and such, but BJ might have the best boxing in the LW division. I give Penn the advantage in striking, for sure.

If Florian kills him it's all over. I don't take KenFlo lightly.

I can't think of anything that Florian is better at than Penn. What?! I really don't even know how you can say that. I figured after all these years of watching MMA, you all of people would know that Kenny Florian... ...has a MUCH better mullet than BJ Penn. It's no Miguel Torres...but it's quite nice. (well, at least he did last time I saw him on ESPN)
