I haven't seen much of the old NWA territorial days, so I have a question for those of you that did watch then or have seen a lot of it on video.
How did they build up matches where a babyface World champion would come in to the territory to defend against a heel?
I get the basic story when it's the other way round - World champ comes in and takes on top babyface, the people are paying to see their guy win the title... Ends up in some screwy finish either because of cop-out officiating or interference from the territory's top heel, and the babyface looks strong without winning the belt.
But how did they promote and book Babyface Champ vs Heel Challenger matches?

The same way. The people would pay to see the heel finally lose a match (especially if he'd been on a winning streak).

When Dory or Terry Funk were NWA champion, they would have the other brother go to the territory first, and the top heel there would start trouble with him... either pin him, attack him, or just simply harass him every time he did a promo.
The heel would eventually get the better of the non-champion brother, and then the champion brother would come in to defend against that heel. This usually worked better when Terry was the guy getting punked out and Dory saved the day, since Dory was the first to establish himself as a top-caliber wrestler. Plus, since Terry is younger, it was easier for fans to relate to the older brother saving the day.
