LIGHTS OUT FOR 'POWER RANGERS' Post staff writer THE plug has been pulled on the once-mighty "Power Rangers." After 17 years, Disney has stopped producing new episodes of the show that was a pop-culture touchstone of the '90s. Apparently, the five color-coded superheroes - Green Ranger, Red Ranger, Blue Ranger, etc. - are still selling a lot of toys, but have become passé as a TV show. There was no official word from Disney, which owns the show. But the cast and crew were informed this week that the show has been dropped, according to reports in the local papers in New Zealand, where the series has been produced since 2003. The show will likely still be on the air for some time - in repeats. But no new ones will be made. The series, about superheroes who can don and doff their costumes instantaneously to fight the bad guys, was based on a Japanese series. It began as "The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" on Saturday mornings on Fox in 1993 and moved to ABC and Disney's kids cable channels in 2003. The show, while hardly controversial, did have its detractors. Some local stations dropped it from their Saturday morning lineups in 2006 when the FCC said the rock-'em-sock-'em series did not comply with government requirements to air a certain number of hours of educational programming each week Honestly, I haven't watched it in a long time, but just the fact that they are gone is really sad. No more Super Legend action figures or anything cool like that.

It's for the best, the show lost its way long ago. It'll make a comeback in 10 years when someone makes a movie where they take an old sentai series, refilm the non-suit scenes with various stereotypes and make a parody of the genre out of it.

The originals in 1993 are the best....if they ever bring those to DVD, I will be the first one at the store to get them.

Well, if they toys still sell, maybe they will make some super sweet and detailed Mighty Morphin stuff to cash in. They changed and made new series too often is what happend. When they went from MM to Zeo as a kid, I already was like...WTF?..And quit watching.

They are very detailed and have lots of articulation points.

That's pretty much what the Mighty Morphin' Movie was. Tons of CG, no re-hashed Sentai image, and missing a lot of it's charm.

Once Tommy, Kimberly, Jason, Zach, Billy and Trini all left, Power Rangers went down the hole

The original was the best. Tommy was the best Power Ranger ever.

That movie better have Lord motha in' Zedd and Goldar.

Weird to see something so important to my childhood finally come to a close. Hard to believe its been around so long, crazy.
Its for the best, though, nothing touches the old days.

There's still one whole series left to go though, if anyones interested. RPM just started this past weekend. It's looking like it may end up being better than Go-Onger but that's not saying much.
It's okay though, as long as i get my Super Sentai and Kamen Rider I'm okay, heh.
And there's always Kamen Rider Dragon Knight if you want some Toku Americanized in the PR fashion.
