WWE wanted to make Austin look as strong as possible. Bret Hart peaked in 1996, from 1996 until WM 14 HBK was the top guy and DX was on fire in early 1998, Bret was on the downside of his career. It would have only made sense for vince to put austin over by having the current top dog job to him. Plus Bret had decided to leave the company by october 1997 which was 6 months before wm14 and wwf pretty much never planned things out more than a couple months. From SS97 until his departure Bret consistantly beat Austin. . . when Austin beat Steve it was never a clean pin. Any promoter with half a brain would built that match up for WM14. If Bret wasn't ousted he would put Austin over at WM14 and they wouldn't have needed Mike Tyson to sell it. As it is, Bret can say that Austin never beat him cleanly.

A WrestleMania lineups story from Foley's book, following on from the other HBK/Rock backstage one: In the run-up to WM15, The Rock vs Mankind feud was such a big hit that there was talk of adding Mick to the planned Mania match of Rock vs Austin and making it a three-way. Apparently, Shawn Michaels was always telling Vince it was a bad idea to make it a three-way and that Mania main events should be one on one. But he was trying to get Vince to go with Mankind vs Austin rather than Rock vs Austin. This might be why the title switched between Rock and Mick so many times in the run-up to the event. Originally, Mankind and Vader were set to win the Tag Team Championships from Bulldog and Owen at Wrestlemania 13, and Bulldog and Owen would feud, but Bret convinced Vince to let them do the Hart Foundation angle instead. I think it worked out for the best. The weird thing about that is they were feuding. That's how the Hart Foundation got together, Bret came down to stop them fighting each other. I would've liked to see Mankind and Vader as champs.

But he was trying to get Vince to go with Mankind vs Austin rather than Rock vs Austin. Even more, this could be a reason for why the Rock allegedly despises Michaels.

From Shawn's book: The Taker thing never happened. The Harris Brothers DID have his back. It's been reported by several sources anyway. He was on pills in 2000 and Hunter ratted him out. HBK went off on him and then didn't speak for over a year. Other sources: -He dated Sunny in the mid 90's and asked her to move in with him (while they were on a trip to Jamaica together.) She decided not to and decided instead to reconcile with Chris Candido. So the Kliq buried him. -It was Razor who crapped in Candido and Sunny's food and not Shawn. - Busted for Steroids in 1993, but claims he never took them. -The iron man story with Bret Hart/HBK where he said "Tell him to get the out of my ring." That's all I can think of at the moment. That being said, I can't believe that some people think he hasn't changed. Did you watch in the 90's? Do you watch now? The guy off camera and on camera seems like a totally different person. He's not pretending to be a Christian.

Of all these bad stories about him not one occured after 2002. It's pretty clear that he is different, just look at all the guys he has put over...kennedy, jeff hardy, orton, batista, jericho, hogan,

While I appreciate Shawn's honesty in his book, I still find it hard to believe many of his claims since the overwhelming majority had bad things to say about him throughout his career.
I guess you could attribute that to their status in the company compared to Shawn and his friends.
But, I'm sure there is a lot of truth to the stories of him being a real prick, too, before he returned in 2002.

i bet he's still an bunghole in many ways, but he also has grown a bit older and realized his zealous antics weren't helping him.

Part one of the HBK shoot interview from (I think) 2000, that covers a lot of these stories:
The same uploader has all the parts up, as part 1 isn't going to have all the gossipy stuff, should be links to the rest from that one.
And here's Sting interviewing Shawn for some Jesus show in about 2005 or so:
Testify!

you can see at the end of the WM12 iron man that shawn tell earl hebner to inform bret to get outta the ring, fair enuf i think. it was shawns moment. You see it now when someone wins a title, the ref informs them where to pose etc. lashleys ecw title win is one example, batista's WM21 title win is another.
its how it is
