www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/wwf+highway+to+hell/video/xemws_the-undertaker-vs-steve-austinsorry, youtube doesn't seem to have it. this thread is not meant to be about how great the "attitude era" was or anything, just a thread about how to get people to really want a match. imagine if cena vs. batista from last year's summerslam had a fraction of the build that this did, it could have done HUGE numbers. And yet WWE randomly had Adamle declare the match, had them win and lose the tag titles, and that's it. someone needs to sit WWE creative down and make them watch this video.

I remember this feud, it was alright. I remember being disappointed with the match, and I was only like eight when I saw it the first time.

I remember being disappointed with the match, and I was only like eight when I saw it the first time. oh yeah I forgot to mention that the match wasn't even that great because taker and austin never had fantastic chemistry together but in the end it didn't matter because of the hype job the WWF had pulled off for it.

What I still love about that feud is that Undertaker challenged him two months before Summerslam. To add fuel to their fire, Vince scheduled the match for Summerslam and made them team up at Fully Loaded. That summer was all Austin/'Taker/Kane/Foley and I loved it. (Not to mention it was the peak time for the DX/Nation feud as well.)
The main reason that match didn't live up to its potential is because Austin got legitimately knocked out within the first couple of minutes. I remember him saying on more than one home video release (one of his own, probably Hell Yeah, and the Summerslam tape itself) that he was very disappointed in his performance that night.

fully loaded was a great ppv that year. REALLY hyped you to buy summerslam a month in advance, and taker was portraying his character amazingly at that point.

yup great stuff........loved the Highway to Hell video that preceded the PPV with all Austin and UTs highlights to date
I still think the best buildup Vince ever did was with the Mega Powers-I mean he started the friction at Summerslam 88!!what a buildup!

awesome build-up!!! the 98' era matches for the WWF title were all legendary....HBK/Taker, Austin/HBK, Austin/Dude Love, Austin/Kane, Austin/Taker, Mankind/Rock - such a brilliant year for wrestling!

In fairness, WWE could easily have put together a kick-ass hype video for Cena-Batista at SummerSlam even with the crappy build. The video could've included their own separate highlights and their parallel rise to power. But they never bothered.
They could have done the same for this upcoming Cena-Edge match at Backlash as well.

I want to add something...but not sure what...so I'll add that Summerslam 98 is one of my favorite PPVs of all time.

Those two give me goosebumps. The Austin/Rock build-up video was awesome because it was emotional and made you care about the match.

They had awesome matches in '99 as well, with the whole Ministry Of Darkness/Corporate Ministry thing...A great time to be a wrestling fan, definitely.
