Ben Stiller fans have been waiting on a follow-up to his cult classic film “Zoolander” since its release in 2001 — but other than a few joking comments from screenwriter John Hamburg, we haven’t heard much on that front to get us hopeful. Still, as Zoolander himself proclaimed, “You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.” Now, it’s looking like that tiger’s getting ready to pounce.
“I’d love to do ‘Zoolander 2,’” the actor proclaimed in an interview with Screen Rush. “We’ve actually worked on a script over the years and hopefully it’ll happen. It’s just a matter of … getting it all together and finding the right story, but it would really be fun to do that again.”
As it’s been nearly a decade since the original film, Stiller admitted that the titular male model that is really, really, ridiculously good looking would have to have lost a little bit of his luster — but hopefully not his patented Blue Steel and Magnum looks. He suggested that the plot to “Twolander” (the title suggested by Mr. Hamburg) would have something to do with Derek’s role as a father.
“It’d have to be about 10 years later,” he said. “I think Derek’s son, Derek Jr., would be grown or at least 10 years old. I think Derek would have to be sort of dealing with the fact that he’s no longer a model. Maybe he has a modeling school. I don’t know. He’s sort of like an older, wizened sort of model — probably with lots of gray in his hair and maybe a beard.”
With Derek out of the modeling game — or at least posing now for the geriatric community — where does that leave Zoolander’s former rival turned bestestest friend, Hansel? Many fans would argue that “Zoolander’s” success was just as much in thanks to Owen Wilson’s performance as it was to Stiller’s, and the actor-director couldn’t agree more.
“Definitely, Owen would have to be in it for sure,” Stiller said, offering relief to fans of the goldilocked male model. “Hansel… [you] can’t do it without Hansel.”
