Ok the title might be misleading but im sorry if it is to anyone.
My question is with all the sites nowadays, back in 1997-2000 were there any rumors of certain stars leaving the WWF to go to WCW or vice versa.
Like I remember hearing Hogan was going to go back to the WWF in 1998 right around the Royal Rumble. Wow how would that have impacted the WWF back then and the WWE today.
Is this Hogan rumor true and was tehre more too it as to why he didnt?
Any other rumors of stars almost going to the other federation?

I had heard the Hogan thing before but I don't know that it was ever really seriously considered. WCW was still #1 at that point. Here's an internet report from around that time in 98 on it:

Here's an internet report from around that time in 98 on it: that's quite an interesting quote. i would agree that the rumour was probably to help increase his price when negotiating his contract. not having a go at hogan but it sounds like something he would do and is part of the reason why he made so much money from wrestling!

There were TONS of reports on practically every big name from the WWF, WCW and ECW and whether they might jump ship. That's the era when wrestling gossip websites really took off. That type of gossip was pretty much a defining trait of wrestling news sites from 1996-2001. Every week it was someone new.
The thing is, as often as those sites are inaccurate or just making educated guesses, there really was some truth to a lot of those rumors due to the landscape of the wrestling business at the time. The business was booming and with two (three if you count ECW) high-profile companies in the U.S., plus Japan and Mexico being options, it was only natural for a wrestler to see what offers he could get before re-signing with a promotion. Even if they wanted to stay where they were, they could sometimes get a bigger-money deal by simpy fielding offers from the competition.

All the rumors of ship-jumping and inner-company sabotage are one reason why I miss the Monday Night Wars so badly.

It kept everyone buzzing as to who was going to jump. When the Montreal Screwjob took place, the dirt sheets made it a huge deal. Another example was when the WWF started doing the Millenium Clock. Some people didn't even know what it was and who was going to debut. Me reading all of the responsies so far had reminded me of how great it was checking out the dirt sheets. I wish it was possible to relive all that for one more day.

Of all of these situations, I was mostly caught by the Jeff Jarrett situation at No Mercy, I remember his contract had expired that morning or something, and WWF had to bribe him to work No Mercy 1999 because he was Intercontinental Champion. Can't recall if that's the real story.

Can't recall if that's the real story. Yep, his contract expired a day or two before No Mercy, so they had to pay him $100,000+ to show up (which is funny because he took a pay cut earlier in the year for that same amount he made that night).

I had always heard that Jeff Jarrett worked No Mercy basically for free, just to put Chyna over, because he knew it was the right thing to do.

I never knew that. I do remember there were always rumors of King Kong Bundy joining the nWo. Lots of rumors from that old rassling site Scoops.

I'm pretty sure Nash and Hall made references to Michaels jumping ship and flashed their little Clique signs on television during that time, too.

I remember in 1996, just after the Outsiders announced they'd have a 3rd man at Bash at the Beach, the Internet was a buzz about who it would be. Everyone was basically a guss, from Yokozuna, Bulldog, Bret (the original 3rd guy), Flair, Luger, etc The one thing I always remembered reading was the use of HBK in 1998-1999. I cannot tell you how many times he was used in a story line or made an appearance only to have the WWF edit it out because he quit or showed up hammered. It seemed like every week for those couple of years the rumors of HBK returning were high.

I recall Shawn Michaels saying in his book that he was going to go to WCW, to scare Vince McMahon, after Vince had given Bret Hart that big amount of money per annum to stay [in 1996]

Just seen into that, Bob. God this guy really shits on WrestleMania X-Seven. Nothing but your typical bunghole critic.
Anyways, it's a good site for resource, I suppose.
