The term has certainly changed. 40 years ago, it simply meant people who thought wrestling was actual competition. Given the fact that wrestlers have been breaking kayfabe for 30 years (even Vince broke KF on RAW after Benoit's death), I don't think this is applicable anymore. I think of marks as "style over substance" fans. Marks are the fans who are happy by seeing nothing more than wrestler A (almost always a babyface) beat up wrestler B. It's the fans who pop when a wrestler mentions the fan's town in an interview even if the wrestler can't put two sentences together otherwise. It's the fan who will swallow the same boring stuff over and over because the company tells them this is what they should like. Prime Example: Hulk Hogan fans. The other type of fan is the internet/hardcore fan. This is the type of fan who demands, first and foremost, that the in-ring action be great. We want good skits, good interviews, and storylines too but the key ingredient to fans like this is what is on the marquee: wrestling. Prime Example: The Original ECW fans. All that being said, we are all marks to some degree just like a fan of any fiction show/movie/book is a mark for the illusion of entertainment. We pay our money for PPVs, autographs, and figures. Whether you are a true mark or a hardcore fan, you still want to lose yourself in the show. I love how all the other responces seemed to ignore or simply glance because this made the most sense and covered both senses of the word and even noticed its lack of significance. Don't normally do this but +1 for you (and if you wanted - karma, just alienate someone who takes the karma system seriously)

I like a mix of all the above, and I am/was a longtime Hulk Hogan fan for years. Even if you hate him, don't have an ego so large that only your opinion counts above everyone elses. I don't like everything the WWE pushes, but they mostly push what sells, if they didn't they'd be out of business after all these years. Who's to say someone can't enjoy all the above?

a mark will fight you if you so much as bad mouth anything about their favorite wrestler. a fan is someone who respects all opinions and just enjoys the industry.

There is no difference, where if you're a mark, a smark or whatever the hell terms you come in with, we're all fans, and that's all we're seen as to WWE. Knowing inside business doesn't make you any more of a fan. This.

To me, a mark is someone who believes the storylines are real, doesnt know the in-ring action is scripted or partially fake, etc. People bing up age, but I know teens who arent marks and people in their 30s who are marks.
Mark has been turned into almost an insult and used in different ways, like when people complain and say "Oh youre such a Hardy mark, etc, etc", but a mark is really someone who is not educated on the real workings ofthe business period. Even when people refer to marking out, its referring to temporarily acting like someone who doesnt know its fake.

Do you actually know people like this? I can't imagine anyone still thinking wrestling is actual competition. Pretty much every noted wrestler in the last 30 years has gone on record talking about wrestling as mock combat.

A Mark thinks it's real, the moves, storylines, anything really that is "scripted" and they beleive it's all real.
