Report: UFC 108's Gabriel Gonzaga Out of Junior Dos Santos Fight Due to Staph by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Nov 25, 2009 at 5:30 pm ET
UFC heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga (11-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) has been forced out of a scheduled bout with Junior Dos Santos (9-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at January's UFC 108 event.
The report comes from Yahoo! Sports' Steve Cofield, who stated Gonzaga has a staph infection. MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) could not immediately confirm the report.
The UFC hasn't officially announced the change to the bout, which was part of the event's Jan. 2 pay-per-view main card and set to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
This the latest in a long string of injuries and illnesses that have plagued the UFC over the past few months. The Gonzaga vs. Dos Santos bout was a pivotal one for the UFC's heavyweight division, and the winner could have earned a title shot.
Gonzaga was returning to the cage for the first time since an August win over UFC newcomer Chris Tuchscherer. "Napao" cracked the UFC rookie with a low blow early in the fight, and Tuchscherer never full recovered. Regardless, Gonzaga had climbed back into title contention with a 3-1 record in his past four UFC contests and was looking for a win over one of the UFC's top prospects.
Dos Santos has quickly climbed up the ranks of the UFC's heavyweight division with three-straight stoppage wins in the organization. Just 25 years old, Dos Santos earned TKO wins over Fabricio Werdum and Stefan Struve before forcing Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic to verbally submit to strikes at a UFC 103 main-card contest in September.
UFC officials will likely keep Dos Santos on the card with a replacement fighter.
The injury train just keeps on moving...

My thoughts exactly... I have no idea who else there is in UFC's Heavyweight division that you could put Dos Santos with at this point. I can't think of anyone...

Damn man. They need strikeforce to go out of business. Then atleast we'd have Overeem, Fedor, Rogers, Werdum, Arlovski, and they should also sign Barnett but i doubt that...

I kn ow people are going to argue about this but all i can say karma is a bitch to Dana White. It does suck that so many fighters are getting hurt form the UFC though.

That really sucks but atleast they just did this HW Ultimate Fighter so they can get a couple people off the show probably plus the winner.

But the heavyweights on TUF are terrible. Some of those heavyweights are heavyweights in the same way Evans and Jardine were during season 2.

the only ones I see being successful in the UFC from TUF are Mcsweeney and Brendan, and Roy Nelson.....
..I think Marcus will have minor success...I have to see one more fight from him because he really left himself open to strikes in that first fight with what Rampage called "the frankenstein" fighting style..

Isn't there a very simple solution to all this Nog pulled out of his fight with Velasquez Gonzaga has pulled out of his fight with JDS
Both JDS & Cain are highly touted & undefeated, let them fight. Winner then either takes on winner of Brock/ Carwin (If it can be rescheduled depending on Brock) or more likely winner takes on Carwin for Interim title. Then whe both recovered we can have Gonzaga vs. Nog.

Bring back Arlovski!!!!!! Please? He is a free agent sells tickets/ppv's, and is good for a fight or two while Lesnar,Nog,Gonzaga are alll ou.........
Wait now is the time for Cain,Carwin, and Dos Santos to step up and show the UFC audience they can beat anyone. So when the veterans (except Lesnar) come bqck We can get some nice title fights.
It may suck now, but I feel this is the best thing for the HW division. It will set it up better.

I'm not sure why people say Arlovski has a glass jaw...I think if anyone got hit by Fedor or Brett Rogers the way Arlovski did they would go down..
I would love if Arlovski came back..doubt it would happen but you never know I guess...
but as far as moogie's scenario goes, as much as I hate Frank Mir I feel he should be in the mix somewhere around an interim title (if there is the need for one). If he gets by Kongo I think he should fight Carwin for an interim title..

Better than WFigs number 1 HW, (what 19-10?) Randy Couture. Arlovski got KO'd by Fedor (possibly the best ever) and got KO'd by a heavy handed Rogers. Arlovski isn't the best but he did a hell of a lot more than Cro Cop for the UFC. But for some reason they give him chance after chance. But no love for former HW champ Arlovski? I get frustrated watching his fights because I really feel he could be a number 2-3 in the world. But he thinks to much, instead of letting his natural instincts kick in. I would like to see him get 1 more shot.
