So in preparation for Mattel figures, I started saving up money that I have gotten to buy Mattel figures. I had more then enough money to buy the only figures I want right now. Usually when I buy figures, my parents give me their credit cards, I order the figures and pay them however much it cost. Recently I have been able to do that less and less.
My parents are starting to not let me buy figures because they are "stupid" and they are a "bad investment" but if I put off other things to save money for these, they are obviously not a bad investment.
Say I need a new pair of shoes or something, if I pick out a pair, I ask my mom if she likes them, she always responds "It doesn't matter, I'm not wearing them." Yet I tell her that the it shouldn't matter what she thinks of figures, shes not playing with them, and she said that those are completely 2 different things.
And now I'm not sure if I will ever get these figs.
Anything like this ever happen to you?

If you have the money to give them than it shouldn't make a difference what you're spending it on, they're just figures at least your money isn't going to drugs and other bad crap like that. I can't say this has happened to me because i kept my mom out of the loop when it comes to my figures plus i prefer just going to the stores, a thrill of the hunt type thing, but yeah sorry bro that really sux...

i've been awaiting the mattel launch date since i first learned that they were going to make figures
my parents knew about it too
i ordered elite punk, elite taker, and jericho/michaels pack and i wanted to do the "bill me later" payment option on TRU.com but they wouldn't let me

If it's your money, it's YOUR money. Somethings in life you should just do because it makes you happy.
$10-$15 here or there isn't a lot of money, and you need to tell your parents to stop acting like it is. Seriously, what are you going to spend that amount of money on that is a 'good investment'?

You're getting old man and it's normal for parents to try to treat you like young adults and such. Of course they want you to start saving up for a car or maybe even for college. It's always good to have a nice safe hobby. All I can say is, if it keeps you out of trouble and it makes you happy, it shouldnt really be that big of a deal. Try to show them that it's not that big of a deal. |

my parents always give me crap about figures but i just remind them that i work 2 jobs and ive never really asked them for anything. its my money and my credit card and my hobby. i then point out my mom's collection of cookbooks and my dad's collection of tools he never has time to use (we have a drill press in the basement that hasnt been used in years). in your case its tougher since ur obviously younger and at their mercy. i can understand them looking out for u. they r being good parents. u just have to show them that it really means a lot to u

You don't have siblings? cousins? that drive, cuz when i was young i always had my sister take me to TRU's for my figure hunts, she always supported me on that cuz i wasn't spending my money on drugs and such i just enjoyed my figures... I'm 23 now and i still feel the same about toys as i did when i was just a child like many of the guys on here. But even when i was 11 i traveled to local stores on bus' and trains tho...

No, infact my family think it's kinda cute that I haven't "fully grown up" yet. I'm not a child still, obviously but the fact that I'm keeping a part of my childhood still going, if you get me.
If it's your money and you saved it, then by all means, go out and buy some plastic. Ask her if you should buy a naughty magazine instead and see what happens.

When i started collecting at age 11 of course I had no money. So every time a figure came I basically had to pitch it to my mom. It wasn't like she was being awful or mean to me she got me way more then I deserved bu Jakks kept releasing figures when I kept not having money. However she never told me they are a bad investment or a waste of money. She knows how much fun I have with them. I am 23 and yes I still play with my figures! So she knows when I get one I will use the hell out of it. But nowadays I canceled all my credit cards so I wouldn't get any further in debit while the economy was rough and while I was switching jobs. So every so often I have to use my mom's card and usually she allows me sometimes she doesn't. But I rarely ask unless it's a RSC exclusive, a really good deal like Shop Free Friday or something really rare at a good price. I am happy I have no credit cards anymore! My girl friend thinks it's cute and my mom thinks its better then buying booze. |

My father has been hating me my entire life because I collect the "stupid plastic toys" (his words, obviously). I'm 27 years old and I've never planned on stopping. If you have the cash, buy them. You can't give into their every whim just because you have and enjoy a hobby you like. If you can, give the cash to a close relative and/or friend and have them get them for you. Don't let your folks try to demean you just because of something you like to collect.
My fiancee is a bigger collector than me now; HBK wise anyway. So that should prove to you that no matter how old you are or what you like, if you enjoy it and love collecting figures, then do it. You can't please your folks forever. They won't live your life down the road. If my future children decide to take up something similar, I will support them fully.

No, not to me. My parents know that it is my hobby, and they fully support it, and even help me find some. I do appreciate how supportive they are of it.
As for your situation, just do what you feel is right. If you do buy the figures I'm sure it will grow on your parents. And if it doesn't and they start to bad mouth you about it, ask them if they'd rather it were figures or alcohol and drugs.

To be honest, my dad thinks its cool and helps me out at times, looking out at stores and calls me when he checks and i tell him what to grab.

i'm to the point where it's more what my wife says than my parents. when she saw how happy i got today when i bought a couple mattels, she said that it was all good and that she loved seeing me so happy - and as long as i don't go overboard and keep the spending under control, she's 100% behind my hobby.
hope things work out for you. (btw- it could just be that this is a financially stressful time for parents especially and they don't want you to end up strapped in the future. i dunno, could be anything really. best of luck.)

no that doesn't happen to me my mom took me to a bunch of places, if you want to get figures online just buy amazon gift cards or visa gift cards they don't ID you for those and if you have a CVS or Rite Aid near you they have the cards and you don't need much to make accounts at amazon just an email address
