Both were HUGE shocks, but which came more as a surpise to you? It's tough, but I'd say his release.
Angle was one of the guys I thought would be with WWE until he was dead. Going onto WWE.com that day and finding out he'd been released was crazy.
What do you think? And do you think Kurt Angle will ever return to the WWE?

Kurt Angle needed a break, and we all knew he would someday leave WWE, but I think nobody ever thought he would leave to join TNA.

I would say WWE releasing him. He was so big in the 'E, that if he needed a break- I thought they would just write him off and give him a few months off, still under contract. I was very shocked when I read they released him.

The release. There were no rumors, no indications, nothing.

His release. I think it was pretty clear that he was going to TNA if wwe fired him.

Joining TNA definatly, I still think he's TNA biggest signing.
Better than Christian, Booker and definatly old fart Foley.

his release, after his release there isn't a lot of places to go so TNA wasn't a big shock

WWE releasing Kurt Angle... there is some guys who have hit the main event, past and presently in the WWE, and could descend far enough down the ladder to warrant WWE parting ways with them for creative reasons... Kurt Angle was not one of those guys, imo.
Obviously he did not get the boot due to creative reasoning, but still, I never would have expected Kurt Angle, non-mangled, given his walking orders.
It's strange, Angle seems like someone that even as a physical mess would benefit the company to keep locked in. Could have went the route of wrestling analyst, manager, g.m. or off-screen agent training the guys who need all the essentials.
Angle signing with TNA was big for them but nothing forbidden or taboo, it was just business. Sucks he never once stepped foot in a ROH or PWG ring.

WWE releasing him, was obvious to me he'd go to TNA. Shame he didn't work a couple of indy's.

I think is release had signs, his injuries and what not.. So I'd say his TNA signing.. You have a point, but even with the injury problems known, there was no indication that WWE would release Angle from his contract. I would have expected WWE to sooner let Angle sit out a year rather than release him and I think everyone else did too.

His release. Coming to TNA was inevitable after his release.

His release - I never thought he'd ask to actually leave, just some time off or whatever but I never thought he'd ask to leave.
He and Big Show were put on ECW to give the title similar credibility to the WHC and give the brand the same prestige as SmackDown! - they were supposed to be the front runners with Van Dam while they built up people like Burke, Knox etc. But when he left ECW fell apart and the whole direction it was going in changed into WWE Lite.
Terrible decision to leave, he was being built up as the new Taz and could have been something special.

Kurt Angle far surpasses Taz in just about every category there is.

Definitely him joining TNA. I mean TNA was doing well with most of their home grown talent and at the end of No Surrender to announce Angle had joined TNA right before there biggest PPV Bound For Glory, I thought it was epic.
