Florian-Gomi set for UFN 21
By Damon Martin/MMAWeekly.com
It appears that pay-per-view isn’t the venue for Kenny Florian and Takanori Gomi. The bout is instead slotted as the main event for the upcoming UFC Fight Night 21 on March 31, leading into the eleventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”
Florian is set to welcome Gomi to the Octagon in what should be a major lightweight battle to help promote the new season of TUF.
Florian is currently ranked as a top five lightweight after picking up wins over notable opponents like Joe Stevenson and Roger Huerta.
The Massachusetts native recovered well from a loss to UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn in December when he submitted Clay Guida in the second round of their contest at UFC 107 in Memphis.
As recently as last week when speaking with MMAWeekly.com, Florian had said he still had no knowledge about the fight with Gomi, but now it appears a deal has been struck.
Gomi is a mainstay of the Japanese fight scene, and made a lengthy run as the No. 1 lightweight in the world when he was the Pride champion.
“The Fireball Kid” has fallen on tougher times of late going 2-2 in his last four fights while fighting for Sengoku and other Japanese promotions. Prior to his recent streak, Gomi has picked up impressive wins over fighters like Tatsuya Kawajiri, Mitsuhiro Ishida, and Hayato “Mach” Sakurai.
The bout will headline a card that is expected to take place in North Carolina on March 31 although no announcement has been made by the UFC about the event yet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Many speculated this would happen. Can't wait to see this one. Hopefully the rest of the card shapes up nicely.
