I think they're kind of turning Big Show into a tweener. First him standing up to Jericho for all he said, then the odd relationship he and Miz had. He's going to do a face turn by the time his new comedy film comes out.
I think this way the only way(other than just a DQ or Count-out) that could have seen Kofi beat Show believably and get into the EC.
This way, there was still a strong showing- Big Show didn't get pinned in an unbelievable freak occurence- and we get an exciting amazing superstar in on the Elimination Chamber rather than Show, who would slow down the pace.
I like that they tried a different finish for once. I don't see them doing something screwy like this all the time.
