I was watching the 3-21-87 episode of NWA wrestling with my wife who has never sat down and watched WWE 24/7 with me, and she was amazed by the brutality of "Hand's of Stone" Ron Garvin.
I've always known he was one of the toughest SOB's in the ring, but this particular squash match of his was a true work of art. It was utterly brutal without Garvin having to use a foreign object.
Garvin twisted and stretched and pounded, scratched, chopped & punched the living daylights out of this poor jobber. The only thing missing from the match was the "Garvin Stomp", but all in all it was a real treat and actually had me & my wife marking out.
The commentary was also classic with Tony Schiavonne and special guest "Gorgeous" Jimmy Garvin really putting over Ron Garvin as a sadist without really saying the word. It was hilarious stuff.
Whatever happened to Pro Wrestling?

I used to love Ronnie. He was stiff as hell, but I loved his matches with Flair. Somewhere I still have one of his towels I got in the audience at TBS studios.

Just being able to have been to one of those TBS shows, is so cool to look back on and say you were there. PS Bro - I officially exalted you for the 1,000,000 time! Congrats!

Yeahh, most of my fondest wrestling memories come from my grandfather taking me and my brother to TBS studios for the tv tapings. Best of all, they were free!

I wish I could have had that experience just once. If I remember correctly, Jake Roberts said when he wrestled Garvin, he could tell when he was about to unload a series of chops because "Ronnie's nipples would get hard."

That was my favourite match on that card. The only flaws was the simpleness of Garvin and Valentine, thinking that it was a singles match and not a submission match. Wasn't that also the first ever submission match?

The good old days, I certainly remember them...Feuds that would be started over what would be consider small things today, but important and vital back then... I'll admit I never saw that much of Garvin, but heard of him receiving 'go-away heat', thinking he was the first I'd heard of to have that dubious honour...good worker though...

Garvin was always pretty over until he won the World Title. It is one of the rare instances where a guys career is ruinied by winning an undeserved championship. Once he came to the WWF the fans did take to him though. I appreciate Garvin more today, than I did then. He is a HOF in my book.

this thread makes me sad we didnt get a CS figure of him. Same here, especially when we got jobbers in the line that were not needed. I think every modern era former World Champion should have been included over the likes of guys like Bob Holly, Steve Lombardi, & Johnny Rodz. Ron Garvin was not only a former World Champion (fluke withstanding) but also a great TV Champion. He should have been given the CS treatment.

I was a huge fan of Ron Garvin when I was a kid and I was happy as hell when he beat Flair for the NWA belt! I think that he was totally wasted in his time in WWE. They made the guy a ref for God's sake! Plus, I agree that we should have gotten a Classic figure of him way before Rodz, Zeus, and the million or so re-paints that Jakks shoved down our throats!

It would've been easy to make him too, and I agree, having guys you mentioned, and including guys like Tank Abbott and Andy Kaufman in the CS line over a talented guy like Garvin is a real shame...

Funny thing is that people seemed to really want him to win the belt until he actually got it, then they realized they were wrong. They only wanted to see him go after Flair. It really is one of the strangest things to happen in wrestling. He was a very good wrestler though, and was a great brawler. He's also the original One Man Gang

I didn't really know who Ronnie Garvin was until he came to the WWF in the late 80's but I liked him. I remember being upset when he lost the retirement match to Greg Valentine but then being thrilled with his referee gimmick. Especially when he would knock someone out that was getting on his case.
I also enjoyed his performance as the special ring announcer at Summerslam 89 when Valentine wrestled Hercules. Great memories.

The thrill of the chase was actually alive back then. That just goes o show how truly great Ric Flair was. He had everybody coming after him and is World Title, and he made them all look like uncrowned champs. He had Dusty, Magnum, Nikita, Morton, Hawk & Animal, Windham, Wahoo, Jimmy Garvin and of course Ronnie Garvin all hot on his tail, not to mention several other dozens around the world in other territories.
