WWE title change?
Sgt. Slaughter defeated WWE champion Ultimate Warrior to win the WWE championship. To me this is the single Worst WWE title switch in history. Slaughter now well past his prime, fat, slow, and boring winning the title was awful. Warrior's title run from WM6 up until the Rumble was pretty damn exciting and fun imo. I'll never understand why they wanted it back on Hulk, who by this point was not nearly as entertaining as Warrior.

Slaughter still had some value to him, ad also with the peak of interest for the war going on at the time; he made a fantastic WWE Champion villain; even if his reign was transitional.
Not to mention he dragged a good match out of Hogan at 'Mania.

Im just saying going from Warrior as Champion to Slaughter is very anticlimatic for Warrior's reign. |

Slaughter was the stereotypical "war heel" which, IMO is some of the best heels of all time. Sure I fully understand that Slaughter was a transitional champ but lets be honest, Warrior was a joke. He couldnt live up to what Hogan was. The torch was passed, Warrior got his run and it flopped and it was time to give it back to Hogan. I dont think having Hogan vs Warrior II at Survivor Series or Rumble would have been good at all so you have to use the biggest heel at the time which was Slaughter. I usually rank the Slaughter face to heel turn as one of the top 5 Face to heel turns of all time. It was something Ill always remember

Hogan was still the most over face in the company at the time regardless of how good his matches were which was irrelevant in that era. Slaughter with his heel gimmick put him over as the top heel in the company and Hogan was pro USA USA USA! It only made sense for the two of them to face off at WrestleMania and put the belt back on Hogan. Warrior had plenty of shots to be the top guy and it just didn't work. When they were together even with Warrior as champ Hogan still got more cheers. I can think of a handful of worse title reigns than this one. |

Can someone explain to me how Warrior's reign failed? I don't mean that in a sarcastic way either, im really curious. From my standpoint it was pretty awesome. Was it a $ fail? Was he hard to deal with?
I have heard several times that Hogan passing the torch to Warrior failed, why?

He was a horrible worker in the ring, terrible on the mic, had zero charisma and when they did let him cut a promo he just snorted and rambled on about nonsense. Was pretty self centered and had a lot of contract disputes and other stuff like that. You should watch the Self Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior DVD.

I bought it when it came out in 2005. I don't agree with anything said in it to be perfectly honest. I found Warrior to be a very entertaining in ring performer. He wasn't technical by any means but thats not what i wanted when i saw UW. I wanted shoulder tackles, bodyslams, shaking of the ropes, little offense from his opponent, and a Warriro splash. He was infact of the best interviews in the bussiness. I can't find an interview of his that wasn't awesome. Sure he spoke about things that were far of of comprehension for most, but he made it sound like the center of the universe. Zero charisma? This is not something that is based on opinon. You are very wrong. If he didn't have charisma he wouldn't be able to be a huge merch seller and ticket seller, which is to this day! |

The question wasn't if the guy could sell merch or not. Hornswoggle and The Hurricane have sold a lot of merch. You asked why was the title reign a failed experiment. Sure Warrior was over with the crowd and had plenty of fans.
When WrestleMania 6 came around it was Hogan getting the cheers and Warrior the boo's as the match went on. During his reign crowd support continued to dwindle. He was fine as IC champ and a mid carder who the fans could enjoy but as the top guy it just didn't work.
The WWF was trying to gain main stream respect and having a "face painted comic book character lunatic who ran down the aisle at breakneck speeds and pounded his chest while snorting" Hulk Hogan was a much better alternative as the top guy.

I still think it was brilliant, because it gave Slaughter a breath of fresh air which he hadn't had since he first stepped in Iron Sheik's way. And it set up Savage vs Warrior which stole the show at Wrestlemania.
To be honest, there wasn't much of better way for Warrior's run to end. All four men walked into Wrestlemania with a full head of steam.

Warrior as champ was a complete flop. Outside of his SS match against Rude, can you think of another big time match he had just off the top of your head? Warrior never did have a big time match. He never carried the ball. He was the champion but he wasnt the face of the company. They put the belt on him and wanted him to lead them through the 90s yet everyone still wanted Hogan. Warrior doesnt have the "it" factor. He was wild and had flashy colors but that doesnt go far at all. He won the title in April of '90 and people were bored with it by August. To me, thats a failed reign |

Warrior was dire aoart from a few matches, such as his match with Rick Rude at WM V, his match with Slaughter at RR 1991, his match with Savage at WM VIII and SS 1992 were all solid matches.

Warrior didnt cut it as a Champion.
Im willing to bet top dollar that most people tuned into Summerslam 1990 to see Hogan get revenge on Earthquake not Warrior defend against Rude.
I enjoyed the Warrior as much as anyone back in the day but what Bobby Heenan says is true-if it wasnt for Rude in 89 we wouldnt think much of him at all........

Warrior did have charisma, I disagree with those who say he didn't, but his work ethic got bad from everything I read and heard.

1991 Royal Rumble is one of my all time favourites - especially for nostaligia reasons.... I was 12 and had just seen Survivor Series 1990 on replay for the first time and had started my WWF/E journey. I had watched what I could on Sky (in UK) and was totally taken in by the Warrior - anyone remember that intro of him with the lightning on Superstars? I remember they hype and for the first time seeing new superstars added to the Rumble each week and was totally taken in by everything. Warrior was my favorite (appreciate now he was a bad worker and had no respect for the business or the stars that paved the way for him) but he had something even if it was just the look, the intro and the music. Him losing the title was a massive shock to me back then but obvious looking back now. We didn't have Sky Movies back then (which is what it was broadcast on in the UK) but listened to it as the picture was scrambled. Maybe it was my age but I wouldn't do that now! After that for the next year or three my traditional birthday was friends round for a Royal Rumble and SNES. But yeah 1991 Royal Rumble always one of my favs (great Rockers vs. Orient Express Match) and setting up the Savage vs. Warrior match at WM7 - perfect. Great title change and Slaughter one of my all time favourite heels! My Dad always loved those boots he had "personally" from Sadaam - and what a way to get the crowd chanting USA USA. Happy days!  |

That was a great event.The opening match was solid with the Rockers vs Orient Express.We even got a bonus match with one of my fav's Koko b Ware vs The Mountie!

they needed it off warrior badly. he simply was not selling and vince needed a villain/hogan buildup. you're right though, that match did suck.
