i don't remember seeing it at the time but i believe it was a heel jim ross who was credited with bringing them into the wwf.
i read an article concerning this and it was the opinion of the author that good old JR was the man to bring them back so that mcmahon wouldn't take the heat when they inevitably flopped. kind of hard to argue with that opinion in hindsight!

I was just thinking about that other day..Deff one of the dumbest ideas ever..As a kid even i knew it was stupid..And during that time i was still young enough that i liked pretty much everything WWE did..Did they really think a fake Diesel and Razor would get over?

I remember as a kid, watching them workout in the locker room before the commercial and thinking, "that isn't them".

Yeah the idea was that they could stick the gimmick on any guy and it would be over. There were even talks to bring in Steve Corino as the new 1-2-3 Kid. Obviously they were going to be heels but the WWF was expecting them to get real heat, not 'go away we don't want to watch this' heat.

I wonder if that's why I saw Corino referred to as the "Lightning Kid" in some old wrestling magazines?

steve corino would've been sick as the 1-2-3 kid. The first time I ever saw Steve Corino wrestle, it was as "enhancement talent" in a dark match at a Raw TV taping in early 1997. My first impression was that he was a good worker that resembled Sean Waltman (at least in stature and attire). If they were going to have a fake 1-2-3 Kid, Corino was probably the best choice. However, I always took the Fake Diesel/Fake Razor gimmicks as the first sign that Vince McMahon was taking notice of WCW, and perhaps getting a little worried about them. It just appeared to be a gimmick born out trying to one-up WCW first, and entertain fans second. Vince apparently wanted to prove a point about "owning" Diesel and Razor Ramon while undermining the value of Scott Hall and Kevin Nash as WCW performers. He failed at the latter, and the former wasn't ever in dispute. As far as the gimmicks being good enough to be played by anyone, I'd say this: Not once you've successfully pushed two very recognizable guys for years. Once you start with one guy, fans will know the difference from that point forward, unless it's a masked gimmick.

I liked them. And let's face it, they sure were more loyal than those Turncoats Hall and Nash were. I got behind them one hundred percent. Good heel group. They SHOULD have done more. 123 kid, a hogan and Savage version too. Even a lugar. Would've been great!

Both guys were offered far more money, for less work. Anyone who says they would have done differently is a liar or a fool. Plus look at WWF's past record for "Loyalty" to former stars who outrun their usefulness. The Fakes weren't terrible wrestlers or anything but there was no way that gimmick was going to ever get over because of being constantly referred to the super-over originals. Apparently the only positive they did was worry Turner who upped the money on offer for Hall & Nash. Yeah, great job there Vince!!

So you are calling the Undertaker and Shawn Micheals liars and fools. They were CERTAINLY courted by WCW and turned them down. So what I said is what I said. Hall and Nash? Turncoats. No loyalty. Look at WWF's past record? Hmm....The limo driver that got paid until his death, the NUMEROUS times McMahon has paid NON wwf employees drug rehab programs...Um. Jake Roberts AND 123 kid...Hillbilly Jim hasn't been under the camera in years. Yet he still works for them... Amazing isn't it? I think if you are loyal to Mcmahon he is loyal to you.

They never made a buck for Vince, but he kept them around for over 10 years, because of their loyalty and hard work.
