It looks like Rashad Evans is in no rush to fight for anything but the legitimate light heavyweight title and will wait as long as it takes for Mauricio “Shogun” Rua to get healthy. In a story first reported on MMAFighting, the former light heavyweight champion recently side stepped the calls for him to rematch another former champion Lyoto Machida and stated that his cage experience is enough to ensure that he no longer fights for the sake of fighting.
Rashad Evans has earned the number one contender spot with his victory over nemesis Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at UFC 114. In the pre-fight hype storm that surrounded their grudge match, UFC President Dana White added a touch of heat to the fire by dangling the next title shot for the winner to claim. Evans was able to defeat Jackson by employing an effective, although non-crowd pleasing brand of wrestling that secured him the unanimous decision victory. In the aftermath of UFC 114 Evans has battled journalists and fans alike who have criticized his fighting style and has voice his frustrations in interviews across the MMA community.
When the news broke that “Shogun” would be laid up for some time due to knee surgery the focus then shifted to a possible interim title bout. While the champion himself has stated that the interim talk seems a bit premature, Evans doesn’t seem to disagree and seems content to wait for as long as it takes for the “Shogun” fight to materialize. Evans does not appear to be the slightest bit interested in a rematch with Machida after “The Dragon” knocked out the season two TUF winner in the second round of their title fight at UFC 98. Since the loss to Machida, Evans has put together back to back victories over Brazilian Thiago Silva and Rampage, thus earning him the number one contender slot in one of the deepest divisions in all of mixed martial arts.
