THQ is to let loose a brand new WWE gaming franchise next year, CVG can reveal.
In total, the title will bring the publisher's WWE brand stable to four - including flagship game Smackdown! Vs. Raw, the more accessible WWE All Stars (pictured) and free-to-play Asia release Smackdown! Vs Raw Online.
THQ core games boss Danny Bilson told CVG that S!VR Online would not be getting a Western release in 2011 - but that WWE fans in the UK and US would see a brand new game instead.
Although details weren't forthcoming, Bilson did reveal that the title would be "less simmy" than Smackdown! Vs. Raw, and closer in style to All Stars.
"[Smackdown! Vs Raw Online] is for Asia," he said. "I don't think there's any chance of that coming to the US or Europe, not soon anyway. We don't want to confuse Smackdown Vs. Raw! [the brand] with that online free-to-play game.
"That's a big, expensive title, Smackdown Vs. Raw! - we will not do any cannibalisation of it at all. The online game is also designed uniquely for Asian playing habits and it would probably have to be modified creatively to bring it to the West.
"So there's no plan to bring it here - because what we do have a plan for on that brand is what you saw with All Stars. And next year you'll see another new extension there in another way - that's just as exciting as All Stars, but a little different. We're not talking about that yet.
"We're growing that brand basically through an alternate SKU every six months - the other SKUs [All-Stars and the unannounced game] are more friendly, easier and less simmy than Smackdown! Vs Raw."
CVG outed the existence of WWE All Stars earlier this year, after spotting that THQ had filed the game's trademark in the US.
The publisher subsequently announced the game before E3, where it was playable on the Los Angeles show floor. WWE All Stars is due for release on PS3, 360, Wii, PSP and PS2 in the first half of next year.

Another new game? Nice. The last time we had three games in a year was with 06, DOR2, and Wrestlemania 21.

Random THQ Employee - "Hey, I've got a great idea!"
Random THQ Exec - "What's that?"
Random THQ Employee - "Instead of spending time fixing the current game franchise we have, with issues that have been on-going for about 5 years now, and are constantly requested every single year, even when we specifically ask for fan feedback, WE SHOULD MAKE A NEW GAME ALL TOGETHER!
Random THQ Exec - "BRILLIANT IDEA! Now let's go submit each other in UFC Undisputed 2010's flawless submission system"
Random THQ Employee - "Ok, but only if I get to tap out in 4 seconds first."

I knew someone would make the 'why are they wasting time working on another game when they could spend more time on the SmackDown! Series' comment. As shown with All Stars, they have different teams working on different games.

Does it specify in the article which team will be working on the new game? Nope. So it's just as easy to assume that a different team would be working on it, as it would be that the same team would be.
My point is that while it's nice to have different options in games, as far as game play, but to ignore certain issues in your "bread and butter" franchise that have plagued the series for a long time, and instead turning to creating more games leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
If they want me to spend $60 bucks on the new and improved game, I want it to actually be improved. If I wanted to play last year's game with new people, I'd just create new people. And from what I've gathered from All-Stars, it's a throwback to the arcade games like WWF Wrestlemania and In Your House. While that sounds nice and fun and new, what's the point of coming out with yet another game that has similar game play as the new game you are about to come out with?

I'm sure Yukes will just handle the SVR series while THQ's own developers will work on these smaller "less simmy" titles like they're doing for All Stars.

I wish they would put more effort into their Iphone/Ipod Games instead. Smackdown vs Raw 2010 has been off of the App Store for seven months due to Control bugs and it hasn't reappeared.

What the hell does "less simmy" mean? I haven't played a SVR game since the PS2.

Maybe it's the long awaited return of Crush Hour! Or not.

Maybe it's the long awaited return of Crush Hour! Or not. CRUSH HOUR 2 CAN FINALLY HAPPEN! But seriously, I wouldn't mind a second Crush Hour game. While it wasn't the best of games, I got lots of fun out of it.
