He's announced that it's looking likely that he'll shoot Avatar 2 and 3 back to back.
MTV grilled Cameron on what fans can expect from the inevitable sequels to the biggest blockbuster ever made, and he managed to confirm a few much-rumoured plot details and his production plans.
"We don't start the movie until we get the deals worked out," he admitted, but admitted that Pandora's oceans will definitely be involved in the eco-friendly sequel and that while he's not going to press on full steam with anything until the deal is done, he's busy making notes and drafting out the plot.
When pressed on the possibility of two back-to-back sequels, Cameron sounded keen as it could surprisingly give his cast and crew a merciful break from the exhaustive schedule .
"That is something that makes a lot of sense, given the nature of these productions, because we can bank all the motion capture and then go back and do cameras over a period of time…"
“The way these back-to-back productions fall apart is that you’re trying to do two live-action films back to back, and you’re working on it for a year and a half, shooting. Everyone is dead. It’s not humanly possible. This type of film, it absolutely would work.”

Fantastic, because it worked so well for the Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean.
You know what else they had in common? They didn't need any sequels. Just like this one.

I agree, although it was bound to happen. I loved Avatar and all, but I've sort of soured on the whole deal knowing how big of an bunghole Cameron is.

The first one was okay. Doesn't need sequels, and sure as hell doesn't deserve the praise it's been given.

This reeks of cash grab to me. The first one had a really good ending (though I think the movie overall was extremely ho-hum) that wrapped things up. Shame...

I Liked Avatar but in terms of Camerons work its still way behind Aliens,The Abyss and The Terminator movies.WAY behind.
I genuinely didnt see the need for a sequel to Avatar but Im sure fans of the franschise will go nuts for this news.

Oh no! Don't ruin Avatar! It's like taking Rocky and adding 5 sequels!

I enjoyed the first film, but I'm not sure how Cameron is going to manage to do two sequels. It'll be interesting to see how things unfold.

Count me out... I fell for the hype of the first one and went and saw it during it's 3rd or 4th week in theaters; I hated all 162 excruciating minutes (minus the 15 or 20 minutes I missed by falling asleep; those minutes were amazing)

AVATAR 2: The Corporation comes back with Bigger Guns and try to kill the Navi who throw more rocks at them and win the day.... woooopieeeedidoo!
AVATAR 3: Judgement Day. The Avatar's age faster than the regular Navi so it is required by a miracle that their lives be saved before time is up.... Oh did I mention the Corporation is coming back again WITH EVEN BIGGER GUNS (IN 3D!)
