Shawn Michaels was recently interviewed by Bill Simmons of ESPN.com. Below are some highlights:
On a possible ring return: "No... I understand the skepticism with that, but I wouldn't have left if I didn't know I was ready. It's funny, I made the decision a month before WrestleMania 25. I knew that 26 was going to be my last one. I didn't know how it was going to look or what it was going to be, but I knew that was going to be my last one... I can't even remember who it was, but like a month before WrestleMania 25 asked how old my boy was. I said he was nine and the guy said, 'Wow, halfway gone.' He said he was halfway to 18 and when he's 18 he's gone. That blew me away... He's halfway gone and I'm not going to miss that. Period... The company is behind it. The ending, the story, everything about it was perfect... To come back, to have another match would taint that moment. That in and of itself is reason enough for me to not come back. I watched the NBC special, I cried. I know the story. It was beautiful... That's how I worked. I wanted to create beautiful moments. My last one the most beautiful thing I ever had the privilege of being a part of and there's absolutely no way I will ruin that."

And you know what? I believe him.
Much respect for HBK, hands down the best of all-time in my opinion.

If Shawn is happy....thats really all that matters. However......I didnt really care for the end and found the match to be EXTREMELY over rated. I would have rather seen him go up against HHH.

I'm glad hes happy. Ive been a fan since since I was really little, it sucks but ive let the one more match thing go a while back. I'm sure we will see him as a GM or manager in future (defiantly HOF) but for now I want him to have a good time with his family.

Good for him. I hate to see him gone, selfishly, but then again it's great to see him sticking to his word.

It still sucks that he is gone. However, it is completely understandable and acceptable. Much respect as always to HBK.

Kinda sad to see him being that blunt about it. Only because theres a selfish part of me that never got to see him live lol.
But tbh it wasnt a good sendoff. Michaels should have got the big flashy sendoff, with everyone crowding him in the ring. And his match should have been against Triple H, Just because they never would have been able to top the WM25 match.
And overrated is not a way to describe the WM26 match. Inferior to WM25? Yes. But for it to be overrated, that would mean that it was praised more to begin with, which it wasnt. It was more about the moment, than the match.

I'm really sad that I won't be able to see HBK on my TV anymore, but if he's happy, that's the important thing.
And after all he's said about not returning, I kind of don't want him to. Of course, if he changes his mind, I won't complain then either.

It's a shame, as at the time nobody knew it would actually be his last ever Match. We just thought he was taking time off.
It was a good send off, but I wish he did it Ric Flair style, and had the last Wrestlemania Match after a Hall of Fame Induction.

I thoroughly believe he will stick to his word, he had plans to retire a few times but he said Vince made it more difficult with all the praise he gave him.

It was a pretty good interview, even though Simmons has some of his facts wrong.
It's worth checking out to hear Shawn's opinion on what the young guys will have to face in order to get over the previous era; he makes a lot of sense because he had to go through the same thing post-Hulkamania and look how that turned out.

It would've been great if Flair thought like this. I agree. Flair's entire moment seems cheapened and quite frankly means nothing, it's sad to see but at the same time, you can blame no one but him. I've believed Michaels was done since it happened. You could tell. All the signs were there, he meant it, and I have a great deal of respect for the fact that he stuck around until he he KNEW he wanted out for good. He didn't give into peer pressure, he didn't do it for all the glory and attention, he did it when he knew the time was right, and you can tell he's totally at peace with his decision. |
