because the mold was already made for him wearing trunks. unlike most wrestling figure lines, the Hasbro mold had very defined lines on their trunks mold. so he'd have trunks, then painted legs, then knee pads. It'd look very awkward repainted with tights I don't agree. His legs a pretty smoth so they would have got away with having him with tights like the nasty boys, LOD, Hogan Mail-away etc.

After thinking about it and looking at prototype group shots from the assortments in 92', my guess is they were to include the Series 2 Macho King figure as is, just re-issue as a filler as they did with Piper. And in the previous year Bossman, Beefcake and Jake.
I guess when he droped the Macho King gimick, they decided this would be a quick fix.

Wow Hasbromaniac these are awesome, I've been on some forums before where people rock up and start posting things that have no background stories, no "evidence" that they're real - if you will - so to see these drawings next to the slides is brilliant thanks for sharing

Okay, last one for now. ;D I don't have a yellow card/blue card Shawn sketch, Hasbro cheaped out and just added his head onto the completed Virgil sketch; save a tree maybe. Anyway, as with the catalog Shawn proto, he was supposed to have Virgil's body.

for some reason, that Jake looks SO much better than the one that got released. I think it has to do with his stance, his legs not being so far out. And I really like the one that got released, but that one just looks much more like Jake, both facially and in stance.

First off I would like to thank hasbromaniac for sharing these and actually bringing something positive and extremely interesting to the forum. It's nice to see some tangible evidence and get a peek at the production process of these figures. This recent onslaught of scammers and connivers has been rediculous and pretty pathetic. Thankfully they aren't too bright and are as easy to see through than a glass jar. So it is indeed a breath of fresh air to see these. Now on to the sketches....
They are absolutely awesome. I've done various production art over the years and I have always been fascinated with sketches and looking at the little steps taken along the way to get to the final product. A little note to the people stating that the head scans or sculpts in the drawings looked better than the final products, the drawings were used as reference material, meaning that they were not images of the actual sculpts. The sculptors would take these drawings along with other reference images and base the sculpt of the figures off of that. So the drawings are what the sculpt was based off of and of course sculptors will always take some creative liberties, so that's why they appear different from the images in the sketches.
The sketches themselves are really insightful and great reference material to how they went about producing these from paper to clay to plastic. I love the Bret Hart sketch and the tugboat sketch really makes me wish they would have went ahead and produced that figure, it would have looked great. Gotta love the "little butt" comment the artist wrote about Tugboat.
An interesting note about the Bret Hart sketch is that it states that the "uppercut" mechanism or "reciprocating punch" mechanism were both viable options. Thank god they went with the uppercut, or we would have had bret doing a bushwhacker type motion with his arms instead. It really pains me to see the Hart Foundation Anvil because it looks like it would have been a really awesome figure and it surely would have been one of the more highly desired tag team sets to own. It would have blown the crappy "new foundation" of the Anvil out of the water.
The revelation that the Undertaker was supposed to have an urn accessory is also very interesting, it's a real shame they didn't make it, the same goes for the Beverly Brothers. But perhaps my favorite of all the sketches is the Randy Savage with the bandana and sunglasses. I would love to know the date that the artist signed this piece with, because it would shed some light into what era of ring attire this was supposed to reflect. One of my biggest hasbro mysteries was why they chose to repaint the macho king figure with the "macho man" on his trunks, instead of springing for a new sculpt or paint job. Keep in mind that this figure came out extremely early in the line, so their cost cutting measures were not yet in full force at this time. I would have loved to see what the intended final product was to be.
Sorry for the long rant, but again thanks to Hasbro maniac for sharing these, this was definitely something worth posting about and a great look into the production of these figures.

Gotta love the "little butt" comment the artist wrote about Tugboat. I totally agree with you. The things I love about seeing these sketches what the original design looked like compared to he finished product and they also give me great ideas for customs. I have already done a custom of Tugboat, based on the sketch and after seeing the Jake Roberts one I am planning another using a Brutus #2 body. Not sure if he head will work though. I have taken a couple of pic of my Tugboat custom but due to the batteries being flat I can't move them off my camera at the mo. If they come out alright I'll stick them on later. I have got this one but its a bit grainy
