It's late 1994 and Diesel sends shockwaves through the wrestling world by squashing Bob Backlund for the WWF title. Through 1995, Vince seems to be positioning him as the successor to Hulk Hogan.
Then the summer rolls around and word spreads across the fledgling IWC that Nash, along with Hall, is headed to WCW. This leads to the massive NWO angle but Nash eventually plays second fiddle to the likes of Hogan and Goldberg.
I've always wondered if Nash had second thoughts about his decision. With the WWF machine behind him, he might have been marketed to the point of Hogan/Austin/Rock notoriety.
Your thoughts?

who knows what would have happened to Nash if he hadnt got so lazy in WCW and got all that backstage power.
he would have fit in well in the Attitude Era(Hall too)so ya never know man.
I would say financially he doesnt regret it for a moment......on the Outsiders shoot they said they started to wonder about going/staying in Feb 96......so they must have been conflicted up until they found out how much less they were getting paid for merch etc.

Nash had ran his course in WWF in my opinion, he held all titles at that time in a calender year. He also had been heel to No.1 babyface to No.1 heel in 12 month period also. Had feuded with major players Shawn (both as heel & face), Bret & Taker also. Only place to go was down the card I feel foir Big D.
Hall on the other hand, had plenty still to offer, not only was he better in the ring than Nash but he hadn't played heel in 3 years (a new heel Razor would have been awesome), never really been in the World title picture during WWF career so still had a ladder to climb (pun) and had potential feuds with Taker, Bret & a face HBK (as a heel Razor) to still play out. Should have offered Hall the big bucks to stay and dumped Diesel from a business point of view.

There was an IWC in 1995?

There was an IWC in 1995? ^^ Haha I was thinking the exact same thing. I really believe if Nash had stayed he would've gotten extremely stale. I think when he went to WCW and portrayed a more "real to life" character he was better off. Kinda like Heyman was saying the wrestling business was changing like the music industry, and when they debuted in WCW they changed with the world of wrestling. I'm kinda glad he didn't stay though due to the fact I really enjoyed the Monday Night Wars

No. He made tons more money. How is that a mistake?

The Diesel character pretty much was done one he dropped the title. When he started referring to himself more as Big Daddy Cool at the end of his run, it was more comparable to his nWo/ Big Sexy gimmick and that just wouldnt have gone over well in the WWE at the time.

I'm glad he went to WCW as we might never had witnessed the nwo and Monday Night Wars.
Was excited when he & Hall returned but is was very apparent at that time it was too late for both of them.
If they'd returned earlier in a DX/nwo angle that would have been awesome!

I think he would have been just fine. His heel turn at the start of '96 was the most interesting that Diesel had been since Royal Rumble '94... which culminated in nothing happening for months.
I don't find it to be a mistake, though. Nash was hilarious in WCW.

The thing about Hogan that, I think, really sets him aside is his look. Even though there wasn't much of it, that blond hair really stood out. Not to mention the red and yellow. Hogan was a character easily recognized. Nash could not have been that. Even though Hogan was over huge a decade before Nash, Nash wouldn't have become anywhere near as big as Hogan in terms of longevity. Nash made money in WCW. He helped kill it, but made money, so for him it was the right decision.

no. i think being Diesel in WWF would never bring Kevin Nash to his full potential popularity. being "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash in WCW did. he was a pretty, pretty big name in 98-99.

The guy damn near put the WWF out of business back in 1995. He helped start the Monday night war in WCW and got a guaranteed contract for 5 years as well.

Wasn't it reported that after Waltman was fired from WCW in 98 that Hall and Nash contacted Vince (or vice versa) about them getting out of their WCW contracts and returning to WWE?

On topic though, and no, I don't think he made a mistake in going to WCW as it pertains to how the business changed, but as Diesel there really wasn't anything else for him to do, titles-wise and matchups-wise.

He was smart though. He and Hall both worked their contracts where if anyone came in that was getting paid more, then they would get raises.

His 95 WWF title run bombed, so I think it was the right time to go to WCW. He co-created the nWo and became a 5-time 5-time 5-time WCW Champion.

There was an IWC in 1995? Indeed there was. That was how I first got my hands on ECW tapes. I used to frequent a site that was called something like alt.sport.pro-wrestling and traded/bought tapes from different parts of the country. That was much nicer than driving around to every video store I could find and hoping that they might have some wrestling that I hadn't seen before.

No. He made tons more money. How is that a mistake? I think he would have made more money in the long term by staying with the WWF. Vince was in love with the Diesel character and would have kept using him in a multitude of ways even after Nash's viable ring days were over.
