I just read it some months ago and that's what I recall reading. I just quickly found his book, skipped to the sale part. Bischoff agreed a deal to buy WCW, everything was ready to go until he got the "it's done" phone call. Jamie Kellner had cancelled all WCW programming, meaning the deal was worthless so they pulled out. They tried negotiating getting WCW Nitro/Thunder on FX, but ultimately it didn't work out and the deal was dead. Since Viacom didn't have an issue with programming anymore, Vince was able to buy WCW's trademarks, talent etc. And didn't he buy it for only a few million, if that? |

I'm just glad Vince got it and we got the Alliance angle and all the DVD's that have footage of WCW and NWA. I'm so thankful he bought it.

And didn't he buy it for only a few million, if that? I believe it was either one million or two million. And the sad part was that there were other offers for like 50 million and up. I believe it was a little under 4 million. Jericho in The Rise and Fall of WCW claimed he could've bought it for the price it sold for. |

Sure they shouldn't have had the whole Kurt/Austin feud be intertwined with the angle. But I enjoyed it all. |

Probably the biggest letdown ever in wrestling. sure was......heel Austin plus a heap of midcarders vs WWF ::)oh and DDP being murdered on TV weekly. Vinces claims that he didnt have the money to buy out certain contarcts was also rubbish.he didnt have to buy them all out either....a properly stacked Invasion card headlined by Austin vs Goldberg would have made this insanely popular card a in MONSTER. also have the vile Steph and Shane as leaders of the Alliance was dreadful.it should have been Bischoff and Heyman. it had highlights but was mostly awful. |

from that moment on WCW started to sink big time.their ratings went into decline badly after this. I remember watching both shows religously and this totally pissed me off and I remember not watching for weeks after.....I was so disgusted Goldbergs streak was ended for this crap. it was an awful booking decision because as the ratings clearly showed people stayed away in droves after this....and didnt nessacerily go to watch WWF either..... Agreed, it was a horrible decision, and seemed to start a trend of insulting the fans' intelligence, which is never good for business. Regarding Goldberg, yeah, the fact his streak ended the way it did also was a letdown, coupled with his heel turn later on when he was really only the last hot draw WCW had. Like Vince Russo always says... "It's just wrestling." Seriously, that was his motto, and I'm assuming still is. sadly, it's the stance many people take when booking. I understand that wrestling isn't real. But good storytelling is good storytelling no matter where you find it. And that little rant basically sums up my opinion on WCW towards the end. Sad too, as it was my favorite promotion as a kid. |

I agree the Finger Poke of Doom angle was not a great booking decision but how come no one ever slates DX for the Xmas angle where HBK lays down for HHH to become European champion? Its the exact same thing, only thing different was it was a different title that changed hands.

I honestly believe Vince did the right thing business wise not hiring Hogan, Hall, Nash, Goldberg, etc at that time. You have to understand that these guys were sitting on million dollar year contracts and that signing with WWF would have violated their contracts thus becoming null & void. Therefore the WWF would have had to pay these guys what they were already earning for sitting around doing nothing plus a high downside guarenteed contract for working a WWF schedule. This would have caused friction with the likes of Taker, Rock, Austin that the new guys coming in would have probably be being paid more than them.

AOL didn't want wrestling on the turner networks, so the Bischoff deal fell through as it wouldn't have made sense to buy a company with no tv... McMahon got WCW for less than Bischoff's group had bid.

The ultimate lesson that should be culled from all this is, even though “its just wrestling”,one middle finger too many and your audience leaves. At that point who says “its just ratings” ? I mean that finger poke drove away some pretty big numbers. The thing is,even though WCW screwed up the big picture,there was still about 6 months of decent WCW programming and matches outside of the main event scene. Even the beginning of the New Blood vs Millionaires Club 2000 angle was interesting. But it wouldn't have mattered if the storylines were as good as a Bible sequel. If you lost your Christians to another religion; how many people are still watching. Jamie Kellner ,most unfortunately, answered that for all of us. Answer: not enough to matter

1) Nash ending Goldberg's undefeated streak
2) Hiring Vince Russo as booker
3) David Arquette winning the World title

I think the idea was that the fact that team WCW was led by a bunch of crappy mid carders and Jobbers. WWE should have chipped in that extra dollar and bought the contracts of Sting, Luger, Flair, Goldberg, Steiner and DDP (grouped with Booker) and had that group go against WWF. |

So many WCW main eventers came into the WWE after the Invasion angle, I really don't know why they didn't bring them in for the storyline. |
