I thought he had gotten rid of bearer because he wanted to show he could go on without bearer and still be as powerful as the deadman.

Paul Bearer actually did die, Undertaker wasn't in a vegetative state, he was really looking for Dragon Balls, and he then wished Bearer back to life. Unless Michelle McCool used the Dragon Balls to recover the Undertaker, and Undertaker used the second wish to wish Bearer back to life.
